We have an exciting fixed term opportunity in our Home to School Transport Team, ensuring safe and compliant arrangements are maintained for children in both mainstream and Special Educational Needs (SEN) settings.

About the role

This fixed term (12 months) role sits in the Home to School Transport team, within the Integrated Transport Unit (ITU). The ITU brings together the council\'s responsibilities for school transport, public transport and fleet management. The Home to School Transport team is responsible for the arrangements of approx. 3,000 students in both mainstream and Special Educational Needs (SEN) settings. This challenging, but fulfilling role works closely with local transport operators, education and social care together with several stakeholder groups to ensure the arrangements are safe and compliant.

You will deliver transport services from a range of providers and monitor contract compliance, under instruction/guidance from the Team Manager and take remedial action when necessary, demonstrating understanding of the service area, relevant procedures and guidelines, authorise work within an agreed framework to meet legislative requirements.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing exceptional standards in customer service and communication
  • Assessment of transport applications to determine statutory entitlements
  • Planning and commissioning effective and efficient home to school transport routes.
  • Development of transport policies, processes and systems
  • Management of a school portfolio together and leading in designated projects
  • Promoting sustainable travel initiatives and providing advice to stakeholders
  • Supporting the public transport, fleet management and in house operational functions within the wider remit of the team
  • Assist with inspections, assessments and monitoring of sites and routes
  • Provide training, supervision and support to officers within the team (regardless of grade) and Passenger Escorts
  • Establish & maintain appropriate links between service users and other professionals to encourage a clear understanding of each other\'s priorities and ways of working.
  • Respond to complaints appropriately to improve service delivery
You will ideally have qualifications in a subject matter relating to transportation, engineering, geography, planning/logistics or educational special needs. However, relevant practical work experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.

Valid driving licence and own transport, or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel is an essential condition for this role.

This is a full-time, fixed term contract for 12 months. A position for a permanent contract, is also available on our website under the job reference of PLTP0298.

This position is currently based at our Castlewood offices in Clevedon. Please be advised that this office will be closing by 2025. Consultation is currently underway to determine the relocation of workers based here.

About you

The following skills or experience are desirable:
  • Knowledge and experience of transport route planning
  • An understanding of the statutory requirements of a council to provide home to school transport and principles of sustainable travel
  • Experience of Microsoft Office
  • An understanding of digital mapping systems, including Geographic Information Systems ( GIS) (training will be provided).
  • Exceptional communication skills to work effectively with colleagues, contractors and other major stakeholders.
  • Ability to demonstrate problem solving and effective team working skills
  • Excellent numeracy skills with financial experience an advantage
