Job overview Applications are invited for the post of Trainee Expert Scientist Dissector in the Histopathology Department of Nottingham University Hospitals. The post is permanent and full time. Recognising the demand for higher scientific training, NUH Cellular Pathology will accept applicants who have dissection experience and want to complete the Diploma of Expert Practice (DEP) in Histological Dissection. Fully qualified dissector applications are also welcome. The post holder will be an efficient, flexible member of the laboratory and wider Pathology service providing a consistently high quality and professional service. The specific aim of the Expert Scientist Dissector role is to work alongside Consultant Pathologist and Advanced Scientist Dissector to dissect Cat A - C specimens independently along with a number of simpler D/E specimens. In conjunction with Advanced Scientist Dissector to assist with managing the day-to-day operations of the dissection room at the hub laboratory. To be responsible for providing specialist knowledge, alongside technical expertise to aid in the training and development of technical staff. While holding the DEP in is desirable, it is not essential. Candidates who have a passion for dissection and would like to have to opportunity for progression are encouraged to apply and will be placed on ANNEXU Band 7 for the duration of qualification with automatic progression on completion.
Main duties of the job Undertake advanced specialist specimen dissection independently. Provide specialist scientific knowledge and work as a member of the team to assess, plan and contribute to the provision of a specialised service. Assist the Service Manager and Advanced Scientist Dissector in the routine management of specimen reception and dissection room. Undertake routine and complex laboratory work within the section ensuring the work is performed in an efficient, organised, and professional manner to provide a high quality, timely service. Train and mentor junior members of BMS staff and doctors in training as required in specimen dissection. Assist in preparation and review of Standard Operating Procedures and other quality documentation relating to BMS Dissection. Provide advice to both internal and external colleagues on the suitability of specimens for analysis and the correct specimen pathway required.
Working for our organisation The department is approved for training by the IBMS/ HCPC and holds UKAS ISO:15189 accreditation.

Working hours are within 08.00 to 20:00 Monday to Saturday and the successful post holder will be expected to contribute to the 6 day service on a rotational basis (5 days a week). You will be required to work in the Histopathology laboratories on both QMC and City Hospital NUH campuses. NUH Cellular Pathology is keen on delivering high quality training and as such would offer the successful candidate the opportunity to complete the ASD in Specimen Dissection with the expected consultant support and supervision of the Advanced Scientist Dissector/Head of Training

Qualifications
Essential criteria

• Must hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology or equivalent
• Must hold an MSc level qualification
• Must hold the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice (DEP) or have significant relevant experience of dissection of RCPath category B&C Histological specimens and show significant progression through the DEP

Desirable criteria

• Other relevant courses with regards to H&S, supervision, quality or training
• ASD in Specimen Dissection

Experience
Essential criteria

• Substantial post-registration experience in an ISO 15189 accredited NHS histology laboratory
• Significant dissection experience from a wide range of specimen types
• Detailed understanding of job content
• Experience of training staff in complex histological dissection procedures

Desirable criteria

• Experience in demonstrating leadership qualities and supervisory skills

Planning and organisation
Essential criteria

• Maintains composure in pressurised situations
• Ability to plan and prioritise allocated work and readjust priorities accordingly

Desirable criteria

• Commitment to undertake any further training required to develop the post holders own practice in line with new and evolving dissection standards and techniques.

• Full understanding and compliance with health and safety protocols. Ability to maintain focus despite background noise and interruptions. Ability to concentrate for long periods of time. Understand and follow complex instructions. Ability to interpret complex radiological images and clinical histories for histopathological correlation.
