The opportunity
Would you like to introduce students to the world of letterpress, using traditional printing techniques (alongside modern and emerging technologies) for experimentation and learning, as part of their education and development at UAL?
An opportunity has arisen to join the technical team at Camberwell College of Arts (part of CCW), University of the Arts London (UAL). We are seeking a Letterpress workshop technician to manage, maintain and develop our Letterpress workshop, delivering support for student learning, informal and formal training and instruction, using highly specialist techniques, production methods and technology.
You'll be responsible for specialist equipment, consumables usage and maintenance in accordance with relevant legislation, health and safety policy and University policy, as well as the administration of systems, bookings and maintenance records.
We're looking for someone who is proactive, collaborative and adaptable, working with academic colleagues to plan workshop sessions, supervise learning activities, who provides expert guidance and can help students diagnose and resolve creative and artistic challenges to meet their learning outcomes.
Your professional competence, guidance, and advice will play an instrumental role in supporting students to realise concepts through to printed outcomes.
Technicians are an integral part of the realisation of students' work: their knowledge and experience enable students to experiment and learn about traditional making techniques and how they relate to inform today's methods, processes and practices of communication.
Your profile
You will need a minimum of a bachelor's degree in art or design, or equivalent industry experience. Knowledge of working in Higher Education is vital, and how technical teaching and instruction is embedded into students learning journey.
It's essential you know how to maintain a letterpress workshop (and it's equipment), and can communicate technical/specialist terms and processes to suit different audiences and skill levels, supporting students as they learn these techniques.
It would also be desirable for you to have experience working with bookbinding, a polymer platemaker, Adobe Creative Suite and Glyphs software.
Additionally, you should possess effective and adaptable communication skills, a good working knowledge of IT packages and the ability to manage calendars, planning tools and engage in effective timetabling.
By bringing your technical expertise, passion for teaching and learning and collaborative mindset to the role, you'll contribute to creating a safe, accessible and enriching environment for students, ensuring their journey with us is second to none.
