Job title: Short Term Power Market Analyst

The Short-Term Analytical Team is an operational team with the following structure:

  • A first team of 7 analysts and a manager dedicated to the optimization of the EDF assets. These analysts are working 7/7 in Paris and their core role is centred on the daily optimisation of the EDF production portfolio in France. The analyst on shift must assess the net EDF position for each half hour and forecast the available upward and downward flexibility as well as the production costs and constraints associated with these flexibilities. These flexibilities and constraints must be translated into epex orders for an economically efficient optimisation on the Day Ahead electricity market to take place. In addition to the active power, the participation to the ancillary services tenders is in the scope of this activity.
Beyond the DA optimization, the team is also computing the costs and position of the EDF portfolio on the WA horizons. * 6 market analysts supporting the French Desk during the week days:
  • 3 analysts are supporting the ID desks in Paris and a manager
  • 3 analysts are supporting the DA and WA traders
  • The Analytics Engineering Manager
Position purpose

In order for EDF Trading to maximise the return from the month-ahead to day-ahead wholesale power markets, either from EDF generation assets or through proprietary trading, the traders require detailed, commercially focussed analysis produced on a timely basis.

In the front office, working closely with both the STAT analysts in Paris and the power traders in London, the STAT Market Analyst has a dual role covering both operational and development duties.

Main Operational Responsibilities
  • Market Analysis:
  • Support the French Desk for the price forecast and trading strategy
  • Liaise with the European Power Desk when relevant
  • Liaise with the London based Analyst\xe2\x80\x99s team when relevant
  • EDF system risk analysis:
  • Follow the DA and WA shifts
  • Communicate time critical information to the traders in London
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including REMIT, through the consistent application of defined processes.
Main Development/Modelling Responsibilities
  • Take charge of critical tools used for front office operational shifts
  • Collect Data and maintain DB to support analyses
  • Provide data analytics to the desk
  • Develop and maintain web interfaces and Python API
  • Manage source code and deployment pipelines with TFS
Other responsibilities
  • Participation to the recruitments
  • Contributions to the team objectives are expected
  • Participation to trainings and team representation
Experience required

Ability to work under pressure, timeliness, accuracy and the ability to understand the wider commercial implications of the work are critical to being successful in this position.

The analyst will use his/her expertise to support the short term power trader while at the same time ensuring an effective operational relationship with the asset managers at EDF. He/she will be expected to take the initiative to continuously improve existing processes, tools and models with the aim of improving the overall management of the EDF portfolio and wholesale market positions

Technical requirements

Fluent in French & English

Educated to degree level, preferably with a high statistics or mathematics component

Some experience of building/developing stochastic or deterministic optimisation procedures/models

Must demonstrate strength in:
  • Python
  • Data management
  • Web development
  • Source code management
  • Continuous integration pipelines
Person specification

As well as having strong analytical skills, attention to detail and enthusiasm the candidate needs to have a commercial approach to his/her duties. Similarly, a flexible approach to problem solving and the ability to work under pressure are essential.

Applicants for the role will also be expected to have strong communications skills with the confidence to work effectively with both power traders and asset managers.

Hours of work:
  • The analyst will spend over 50% of his/her time on short-term operational analysis, and the remaining 50% on specific development or modelling work with the aim of improving existing analysis and processes.
  • 40 hours per week
