The Faculty of Science and Engineering, wish to appoint a Technician to provide teaching and research support for the School of Biological and Marine Sciences (SoBMS).
You will work as part of a team under the direction of the Technical Manager and deliver support in all aspects of laboratory and field work with a focus on Marine Biology. The service underpins both teaching and research activity in biological and marine sciences. You will be computer literate, enthusiastic, pro-active, and able to prioritise and understand the principles of providing a high standard of support to students and academic staff.
It is essential that you have a formal qualification resulting from a period of practical and theoretical training e.g. a degree or equivalent in Marine Biology or a relevant subject area. In addition knowledge of laboratory Health & Safety e.g. COSHH and Risk Assessments. Familiarity with reagents, chemicals, scientific consumables and instrumentation / equipment is required.
You will be required to assist in field work both at sea and on land in occasional poor weather.
You will need to be capable of working occasional long shifts and there will be a requirement to carry heavy equipment, up to 25kg, over uneven terrain for up to 1km.
A current full driving licence (manual transmission) is essential as you will be driving University of Plymouth vehicles.This role is also subject to health surveillance with our Occupational Health team.
