London, United Kingdom

Job Description

High Holborn, London

The Role

We are recruiting an additional senior officer to increase the capacity and capability of the Supervision Team, particularly in relation to our supervision of the vocational Bar training providers, which forms an important part of our business plan this year. We would therefore particularly welcome applications from people with experience in the regulation of higher or professional education. You will be required to communicate confidently and professionally with a range of external stakeholders, as well as with colleagues across the BSB.

Full details of the role requirements, and role specification can be viewed in the job description.

The BSB

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) regulates barristers and their professional practice and specialised legal services businesses in England and Wales in the public interest. We are responsible for setting education and training requirements, setting standards, authorising organisations, monitoring the service provided, and handling reports, taking enforcement or other action where appropriate. Barristers work at the heart of our justice system so BSB\'s mission is fundamentally important to the maintenance of the rule of law.

Our people value our friendly and respectful environment, our support for flexible working, the opportunity to have a high degree of impact and our interesting, challenging and varied work.

More about our work can be viewed on our website, including our strategic objectives for 2023.

The Supervision Team

We supervise barristers, chambers, BSB entities and organisations that provide vocational Bar training and pupillage. Our Supervision activity is designed to:

  • protect and promote the public interest and the interests of consumers;
  • proactively identify risks and take appropriate action to prevent them from
  • materialising;
  • encourage more effective risk management by those we regulate and improvements in the level and consistency of compliance with our regulatory requirements;
  • target our resources at those organisations, individuals or areas that present the highest risk to our Regulatory Objectives; and
  • evaluate the effectiveness of our regulatory policy.
In undertaking our supervision activity, we adopt a risk-based approach, in line with our Risk Framework.

An important part of the work that we do is proactive, such as gathering information to support our assessment of risk, conducting sample checks of compliance with our regulations and conducting thematic reviews on areas of focus in our strategic plans. We also work closely with colleagues across the BSB on areas of regulatory policy development. Examples of this can be seen in our current business plan on our website. This part of our work plays an important role in enabling the BSB to foster a constructive relationship with those we regulate and other stakeholders, to achieve appropriate outcomes, resulting in less enforcement action and better protection and promotion of consumers\' interests.

Other work that we do is reactive, responding to reports to the BSB from stakeholders including barristers, pupils, members of the public and other regulators about concerns they have.

The work is varied and interesting, and involves engaging with a wide range of people and organisations. The team is collaborative and supportive, whether working from the office or at home.

The team currently comprises the Head of Supervision, two managers, five senior officers and two officers. The post holder will report to one of the managers.
