Senior Lecturer in Pharmacoepidemiology (Research & Teaching)

The University of Glasgow\'s new Centre for Health Data Science dedicated to cutting-edge research on data science and artificial intelligence. The Centre will facilitate the initiation and expansion of sustainable collaboration across disciplines, industries, public, and government to have impactful research that ultimately will make the world better for all.

The Centre for Health Data Science is part of an approximately \xc2\xa32.8m investment by the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS) over the next 5 years to bolster research capabilities in the University. This is in addition to an investment of \xc2\xa32.5M in establishing a high-performance computing cluster in the College.

As a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacoepidemiology at the new Centre for Health Data Science within the College of MVLS, you will play a vital role in advancing the strategic direction of the School/College.

Job Purpose:

The post holder will lead and contribute to research of international standard, delivering high-quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, securing research funding, and providing academic leadership and management within the School/College. Additionally, you will actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders to drive knowledge exchange, promote public understanding, and foster outreach initiatives.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Research Leadership: Take a leading role in the development and implementation of individual and/or collaborative research projects of international standard. Actively contribute to the formulation of the College/School research strategy.

Principal Investigator: Serve as principal investigator or project leader on major research projects, maintaining a portfolio of research activities and publications of high quality and impact.

Funding Initiatives: Lead major funding bids and related activities, including Knowledge Exchange efforts, to secure sustained support for the field of Pharmacoepidemiology and achieve recognition of excellence for the University.

Academic Management and Leadership: Undertake academic management and leadership responsibilities to ensure high-quality course/programme administration. Set and monitor standards while spearheading the development of policies and practices across research and teaching teams, extending beyond subject/school level.

Networking and Collaboration: Establish and develop effective networks with students, staff across the University, and external stakeholders. Oversee the integration of key University priorities, such as graduate attributes, professional requirements, work-related learning, transitions support, student mobility, and quality enhancement, within credit-bearing and non-credit-bearing activities.

Innovative Teaching Methods: Lead the development of inclusive and innovative approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment, addressing the needs of a diverse student cohort. Assume responsibility for managing associated cultural changes and supporting staff development.

Dissemination of Research: Regularly participate in appropriate activities to effectively contribute to the field of Pharmacoepidemiology through engagement with learned societies, professional bodies, broader review, and editorial processes. Disseminate research findings locally, nationally, and internationally to enrich learning within the discipline and represent the University externally.

Public Engagement: Use an established network of external stakeholders to influence public understanding and professional policy and practice in alignment with the strategic priorities of the School/College/University.

Student Supervision: Supervise individual student projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, ensuring their effective development and providing assistance with any difficulties, including learning support/problems.

Professional Development: Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in Pharmacoepidemiology.

Additional Responsibilities: Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

Qualifications:

Essential:

A1 A Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in a related discipline with an extensive and established reputation in research.

A2 Significant teaching experience within the field of Pharmacoepidemiology.

A3 Recognized expertise in the subject discipline/specialism to contribute to new knowledge and understanding within the field.

A4 A thorough understanding of and track record in contributing to broader academic leadership and management at School/Service/College level.

A5 Engagement with current practice and developing knowledge in the field of Pharmacoepidemiology.

A6 Familiarity with the current and future priorities of University/College/Service strategies, aims, and ambitions.

A7 Membership of a relevant professional body, if applicable.

Knowledge/Skills

Essential:

C1 Expertise in Pharmacoepidemiology: The candidate should possess a thorough understanding of pharmacoepidemiology, which involves studying the effects of drugs in human populations and investigating the relationships between pharmaceuticals, disease research, and healthcare. Pharmacoepidemiologists work with large datasets, analyze significant statistics, and draw insights to inform medical and healthcare decisions that can positively impact patients\' lives and eliminate and treat diseases.

C2 Background in Clinical Pharmacology: The candidate should have knowledge and understanding of the effects of drugs in humans, including clinical pharmacology. This knowledge is essential for studying how medicines impact patients and ensuring their safety and efficacy.

C3 Expertise in Epidemiology: The candidate should possess a strong background in epidemiology, as pharmacoepidemiology is a multidisciplinary science that draws on an in-depth understanding of both pharmacology and epidemiology. This knowledge helps in designing and conducting scientifically valid observational studies and risk assessment related to the use of medicines.

C4 Statistical Skills: Pharmacoepidemiologists work extensively with data and numbers to draw meaningful conclusions. Candidates should have proficiency in statistical analysis software such as R, Python, SAS or STATA, and a sophisticated understanding of quantitative methods and biostatistical principles.

C5 Proven ability to plan and lead staff, efficiently deploying resources in support of major research and teaching activities.

C6 Ability to disseminate conceptual and complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences to promote understanding.

C7 Capability to undertake academic leadership of groups/activities with substantial impact on finance and other resources.

C8 Skill in establishing new and effective relationships with colleagues, both internally and externally, to foster collaboration across the University and with colleagues in other institutions.

C9 Demonstrated independent thought to generate original research and secure research income.

C10 A substantial track record of published research of international standard compatible with enhancing the School\'s submission to the REF.

C11 Established track record of successfully securing funding for research projects, relevant to the subject specialism.

C12 Internationally recognized excellence and reputation in the field of Pharmacoepidemiology, along with scholarship of teaching in the discipline.

C13 Proven track record of developing and devising teaching programs, techniques, and methods.

Experience

Essential

E1 Experience in student supervision and development/mentorship/coaching of early-career academic colleagues in the field of Pharmacoepidemiology.

E2 Commitment to open research, with appropriate practices such as open data, open code, and open educational resources to support replication.

E3 Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 9, \xc2\xa357,696 - \xc2\xa364,914 per annum.

This post is full time and open ended.
