The opportunity:
At Leonardo, we have a fantastic new opportunity for a Senior Laser Engineer. Leonardo is a global leader in defence electronics and delivers mission critical systems for situational awareness, electronic warfare an surveillance across land, sea and air.
The Radar and Advanced Targeting (RATs) line of business, based in Edinburgh, is uniquely positioned as one of the world\'s top manufacturers of radars, lasers and infra-red countermeasure systems. You will join a world-class optics and laser development team which provides leading-edge solutions into the global
defence sector. The extensive product range includes targeting lasers, stabilised laser delivery systems, electrooptic countermeasures solutions and electro-optic targeting and surveillance systems.
This position has been created during an exciting period of technology development and business growth, with Leonardo at the forefront of creating laser solutions for emerging defence applications including compact airborne electro-optical systems and high-energy lasers.
What you\'ll do as a Senior Laser Engineer:
As a Senior Laser Engineer you will be part of a specialist group tasked with developing new fibre laser design and engineering capabilities to address emerging business opportunities across a wide range of military applications.
You will be involved in developing and using computational modelling techniques for the analysis of fibre lasers and fibre laser systems. This will be underpinned by conducting practical work in the development laboratories. You will
have the opportunity to influence the progress, direction and successful delivery of the fibre laser capability. The role will also support one of the largest manufacturers of traditional solid state military lasers to introduce a manufacturing and integration capability for fibre laser products.
What we need from you:
You really must have:
\xc2\xb7 Experience working in a laser product development and/or laser applied research environment.
\xc2\xb7 Previous ownership of a laser design which has been manufactured (in one off or volume production).
\xc2\xb7 Experience in the design, characterisation and manufacture of fibre lasers using appropriate commercial tools.
\xc2\xb7 An advanced understanding of laser physics and a detailed understanding and familiarity with fibre laser types as well as solid-state lasers.
\xc2\xb7 Related Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree (e.g. Physics).
It would be nice if you had:
\xc2\xb7 Experience relating to scaling fibre lasers to high power.
\xc2\xb7 An appreciation of the mechanical and electrical design aspects of laser systems.
\xc2\xb7 Experience working in a laser research and development or manufacturing environment.
\xc2\xb7 Strong analytical, modelling skills and good laboratory skills are beneficial.
\xc2\xb7 PhD with a significant fibre laser design content.
