London, United Kingdom

Job Description

Company Description

We\'re Checkout.com

Checkout.com is one of the most exciting fintechs in the world. Our mission is to enable businesses and their communities to thrive in the digital economy. We\'re the strategic payments partner for some of the best known fast-moving brands globally such as Wise, Hut Group, Sony Electronics, Homebase, Henkel, Klarna and many others. Purpose-built with performance and scalability in mind, our flexible cloud-based payments platform helps global enterprises launch new products and create experiences customers love. And it\'s not just what we build that makes us different. It\'s how.

We empower passionate problem-solvers to collaborate, innovate and do their best work. That\'s why we\'re on the Forbes Cloud 100 list and a Great Place to Work accredited company. And we\'re just getting started. We\'re building diverse and inclusive teams around the world - because that\'s how we create even better experiences for our merchants and our partners.

Role overview | Context

Reporting into our Chief Accounting Officer/Controller, and working closely with other senior and executive leaders including our CFO, the incoming Senior Director, Legal Entity Financial Control will sit in a multi-layered team which underpins all operations across Finance, Accounting and Controls. This team owns the top-to-bottom suite of financial reporting and control activities for Checkout\'s individual Legal Entities (LEs). This role is responsible for identifying, developing, implementing and operating reporting and control best-practices that can be applied across each Legal Entity via its respective management team and/or controller.

Checkout.com\'s global reach necessitates that we have Legal Entities sitting in a number of jurisdictions. Our CAO/Controller organisation ensures that specific requirements and customs are accommodated and optimised across these jurisdictions; doing so from a foundation of robust and intelligent practices that are globally-consistent wherever possible. Our CAO/Controller function and team continually strive to ensure that progress and changes from entity to entity do not become siloed or exist in a vacuum. Instead, it is crucial that the incoming Senior Director can balance the need for effective localisation vs. consolidation of controls measures, and can cultivate an environment in which we seek to strengthen our control environment as a whole by learning from each other\'s experiences and applying best-practice as broadly as possible. This role partners closely with other key Finance teams including Technical Accounting, Group Financial and Regulatory Reporting, and Financial Controls and Transformation.

Role overview | Remit and Responsibilities

  • Leading a team of ~20 globally-diverse LE controllers to ensure highest possible standards of control, and optimised financial reporting practices are maintained. Load-balancing across the global team as jurisdiction-specific surges and escalations arise.
  • Setting the vision for, and implementing, financial reporting and control processes for Checkout\'s individual LEs.
  • Cultivating and enforcing best-practice for day-to-day financial operations across all LEs.
  • Building a suite of documents that govern these operations and communicating and training Finance and non-Finance stakeholders (incl. LE Boards, internal and external audit) on our policies and practices across jurisdictions.
  • Representing the relevant Checkout LE in regulatory, internal and external audit examinations; being the bridge between global policy and local practice.
  • Taking a subject-matter-expert and leadership role in structural change initiatives, including but not limited to: acquisitions and disposals; corporate structure changes; and expansion into new geographies.
  • Managing interactions and cultivating constructive relationships with external stakeholders in each jurisdiction (such as regulators, external audit, vendors and service providers)
  • Responding to new requirements (e.g. changes in local law) by ensuring that Finance practices evolve to remain fit-for-purpose at all times and across all jurisdictions.
  • Advising on the implementation of enterprise-preferred systems (expense management and payment approval, control reconciliations, control self-assessment etc.)
  • Engaging in accounting analysis with, and actioning accounting guidance from, Checkout\'s Technical Accounting teams.
  • Partnering particularly closely with LE Treasury and Tax teams on day-to-day activity as well as strategic, \xe2\x80\x9cbig-rock\xe2\x80\x9d initiatives and their impact/interpretation across multiple LEs.
  • Think \xe2\x80\x9cbig\xe2\x80\x9d and \xe2\x80\x9csmall\xe2\x80\x9d simultaneously: design and enforce practices that comport with and support enterprise standards, but recognize and accommodate local nuances and customs.
Qualifications

Candidate profile | Desired Skillset, Core Competencies

Successful candidates will bring a strong accounting and financial control background, and will have experience in an operational financial control leadership role. A candidate with experience in both \xe2\x80\x9cbuilding\xe2\x80\x9d and \xe2\x80\x9crunning\xe2\x80\x9d financial reporting and financial control functions is strongly preferred. This role demands the ability to live with, and contribute to, the changes and innovations that Checkout\'s Finance function is continually undergoing as part of a global, high-velocity growth organisation en route to IPO. It is also important that the incoming Senior Director be able to showcase the level of integrity and discipline demanded by an enterprise that operates in complex, highly-regulatory environments, ideally from their own previous experience within traditional finance, banking or payments/fintech ecosystems or other high-reg, high-volume environments. They must understand best-in-class finance controls, systems and processes and be comfortable developing and maintaining a high-level strategic vision, and owning the hands-on, grass-roots delivery of that vision.
  • Deep knowledge of financial systems and processes, and a proficient technical accountant by background.
  • Experience delivering a suite of interrelated financial reports (multiple individual LEs as part of a consolidated group), including the process required to complete successful financial statement audits of those LEs.
  • Experience interacting with external and internal \xe2\x80\x9cchallenger\xe2\x80\x9d roles and delivering to a high degree of scrutiny (such as regulators and auditors).
  • Seasoned stakeholder manager; will be comfortable being a highly visible leader on the Finance leadership team and liaising closely with technical and operational SMEs, and senior company leadership to drive adoption of best practices across the wider organisation.
  • Formally recognized accounting qualification is strongly desired.
  • Must be a strong people leader with a track record of success in leading and building globally dispersed teams.
  • Deep SME in ICOFR/ICFR and financial reporting systems, processes and related risks.
