Job overview

Ashurst Advance Digital is the firm's technology and experience powerhouse. We work with our New Law business to develop differentiated services for our clients, whilst embedding digital as a competency for the whole firm through developing and enabling future-fit tools, capabilities and mindsets. Ashurst Labs is the community within AAD responsible for the firm's experimentation environment, designing, developing and managing digital platforms, products and solutions, together with the curation, ownership and governance of platforms used by AA. It does this through the three disciplines of software development, product management, and data science. Recent work has included creating a digital front door, subscription management and authentication portal for our clients, developing an award-winning cross-border advice tool, and consultancy for the firm and clients on GenAI strategy and governance.

Main Tasks

We are seeking a talented Scrum Master to join our small development team and support the development of solutions within Microsoft Azure. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited, to:



Agile facilitation and empowerment


Co-ordinate and facilitate team meetings including project planning, sprint planning, retrospectives, demos, daily stand-ups and release planning activities Mentor team members to adopt an agile mindset, including ownership, self-management and empowerment.


Delivery management


In partnership with the Product Manager, create and maintain product backlogs, brokering discussions between the Product Manager and scrum team as required. Assist the team with making appropriate delivery commitments by means of story selection, task definition, refinement processes and removing impediments Ensure that team commitments on delivery are met and that agile principles are adhered to.


Performance management


Define relevant KPIs and use these to measure the performance of the development process, reporting on the performance of the scrum team. Guide the team members to achieve optimum productivity through ongoing process improvement


Agile champion


Act as a consultant and champion for agile initiatives within AAD, Ashurst Advance and the firm as appropriate.

Essential skills and experience

Agile expertise:

Professional experience as a Scrum Master, Agile Delivery Manager or Project Manager using the Scrum methodology.

Technical knowledge:

Experience working in a software development environment and familiarity with common Agile techniques such as User Stories, TDD, Continuous Integration and Automated Testing.



Experience with Azure: DevOps and Jira/Atlassian for administration of sprints, delivery of dashboards, reporting and Wikis.

Scrum and project management

Excellent knowledge of Scrum techniques and artifacts (definition of done, user stories, automated testing, backlog refinements).



Solid knowledge of project management fundamentals and practices within an Agile framework.

Communication and learning

Excellent communication skills and a track record of people and project leadership.



Experience guiding development teams to a higher level of scrum maturity.



Capabilities/ skills we look for:





Must have:


Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Minimum of 3 years of experience in a Scrum Master role or similar, with a strong focus on agile methodologies and software development. A recognized Scrum Master qualification is preferable (e.g., CSM, PSM). Experience in creating automated tests, developing test strategies, and performing manual testing. Proficiency in using Azure DevOps, Jira, and other agile project management tools.


Should have:


Experience working in a law firm or an adjacent industry. Knowledge and interest in the evolution and transformation of the legal industry. Knowledge and interest in data science and analytics. Ability to absorb large amounts of information and create sense and simplicity. Confidence and fluency in the language and tools of agile, lean and design Expertise and interest in generative AI and the risks and opportunities it presents in software tools and the development of those tools.


Could have:


Experience deploying GenAI enabled products or solutions. o Familiarity with a law firm environment, legal content and services.


Won't have


An aversion to getting hands dirty and training up others in your discipline!
