About the role

Our vision for Robotics at UCL East Campus is to set up a new robotics powerhouse at UCL. To support our vision, over the next few years, we will be hiring more than 20 research and teaching staff in Robotics and AI. To provide world-class facilities at UCL East Campus for research and teaching in Robotics & AI, we are seeking a Robotics Technician to be part of an interdisciplinary team providing development and maintenance support for the teaching and research activities, including the new MEng and MSc programmes in Robotics and AI. The robotic systems included in our facilities, aimed for teaching and research, vary, e.g., wheeled, legged, manipulation, flying, surgical, soft robots, to name some, performing from teleoperated to autonomous tasks. The role will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the robotic labs, including associated storage and preparation areas, line management of at least one apprentice and coordination with other technicians who work within academic groups who are using the robotic labs. The role holder will ensure the safety of staff, students, and visitors, including overseeing risk assessments, induction processes, safe storage of material and equipment and waste disposal. Budget responsibility for the laboratory, including staff, equipment, maintenance, and consumables is also a key part of the role, as well as timetabling, with a detailed understanding of the technical, teaching, research, and safety requirements for scheduled activities. The Robotics Technician will play a key role in achieving the vision for UCL East, including facilitating academic collaboration and innovation, achieving sustainability targets, and developing a positive technical staffing culture, with opportunities for development and sharing good practices. This is a full-time, open-ended post, which will be based on our new UCL East Campus in Stratford.

About you

The successful candidate will possess and HNC, degree or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering, electronics or robotics. You will have experience of providing practical technical support for the manufacture, assembly and testing of robotics and associated systems and a experience of robotics hardware and software. It is essential that you can demonstrate and test working systems to establish their operational limits, can communicate clearly and effectively and have a commitment to high quality work, fostering a positive learning environment for students and researchers.
