About the role:
We are looking for a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Retail Shop Assistant to join our team and help our customers create and maintain thriving aquatic environments. You will play a key role in providing expert advice, assisting with product selection, and ensuring our aquatics section is well-maintained and visually appealing.
This is a full-time position working 42 hours per week 10am-6pm. Some flexibility will be required to meet business or animal welfare needs. Our public industry includes working regular weekends, bank holidays and school holidays as well as being on-call for out of hours emergencies and working sometimes early or late to meet business and animal care demands.
Responsibilities:
Provide exceptional customer service, offering friendly and informative advice on marine and freshwater fish, invertebrates, plants, and associated products.
Utilise your knowledge of different aquatic species to help customers choose the right livestock and equipment for their needs.
Maintain a healthy and visually appealing aquatics section, including regular tank maintenance, water testing, monitoring behaviour, and ensuring livestock are in excellent condition.
Deliver basic veterinary care and treatments.
Life support systems maintenance.
Process sales transactions accurately and efficiently using our point-of-sale system.
Assist with receiving and stocking new livestock and products, ensuring proper handling and care.
Monitor stock levels and inform management of low or out-of-stock items.
Daily record keeping and compliance with company policies and protocols.
Answer customer inquiries via phone and in-person, providing accurate and helpful information.
Keep up to date with the latest products, trends, and best practices in the aquatics industry.
Adhere to all company policies and procedures, including health and safety regulations.
Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment.
Requirements:
Proven previous experience in a retail environment, ideally within the pet or aquatics industry.
A strong knowledge base of both marine and freshwater aquarium systems, including fish species, invertebrates, plants, and their care requirements.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a genuine passion for helping customers.
Ability to handle live animals responsibly and with care.
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently under own initiative with high attention to detail and collaboratively as part of a team.
Flexibility to work weekends and occasional evenings as required.
A proactive and enthusiastic approach to learning and development within the role.
Desirable (but not essential):
Formal qualifications or certifications related to animal care, marine biology or similar.
Experience with water testing and maintaining aquarium parameters.
Experience in providing basic veterinary treatment and care to aquatic species.
Confident with animal husbandry practices for vertebrate and invertebrate species.
Familiarity with point-of-sale systems and inventory management.
Full clean UK driving license and personal vehicle.
Benefits:
Competitive salary, 24,000 - 26,000 per annum
