Job description

The Laboratory of Dr Graeme Hewitt is based at Kings College London School of Cancer & Pharmaceutical Sciences. Our group uses genetic screens and a range of molecular and cell biology techniques to uncover the molecular mechanisms of DNA damage repair. With a specific focus on understanding how the DNA damage response (DDR) can be targeted alongside radiotherapy to improve therapy response and overcome resistance.

We are seeking enthusiastic, self-motivated research technician to join the Hewitt lab. You will work closely with other lab members and can acquire skills in a wide range of techniques such as mammalian cell culture, live-cell imaging and whole genome CRISPR screens.

The Hewitt lab is open to considering candidates from a broad range of experience levels including recent graduates and more experienced researchers. Depending on skill and experience level, the chosen candidate may take on their own independent research project.

Your research will take place in the Innovation Hub on the Kings College Guy\'s Campus. At the Innovation Hub you will work closely alongside other groups working on many aspects of cancer biology. As part of the City of London RadNet network between Kings, UCL, Barts and the Francis Crick institute you will have access to an extensive network of knowledge and state of the art technologies.

Hewitt lab has ongoing collaborations with partners in industry. Allowing lab members, the valuable opportunity to gain insight into drug discovery and development processes.

This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract for 1 year from start date with the opportunity to extend.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct novel research as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Ordering laboratory supplies and maintaining lab stocks and databases.
  • Testing, maintaining and cleaning lab equipment.
  • Key assays/procedures e.g. mycoplasma testing (PCR), Cell line banking and Cell line generation.
  • Present research regularly in lab team meetings and seminars.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date lab records.
  • Share skills by training others and a willingness to work collaboratively.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques through internal and external collaborations.
Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1. BSc or MSc in Biological Sciences or related field.

2. Experience working in a technical or scientific role.

3. The ability to troubleshoot laboratory problems.

4. The ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently and produce work to deadlines.

5. Strong Interpersonal, organisational and communication skills.

6. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.

7. Tissue/cell culture experience.

8. Molecular biology experience in PCR and cloning.

9. Ability to demonstrate attention to detail when performing and recording experiments.

10. Excellent IT skills with high proficiency in software such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook.

Desirable criteria

1. Familiar with programming languages for data analysis such as R and Python.

2. Experience with lab-specific software such as Quartzy, Endnote, Benchling and GraphPad.

3. Experience in CRISPR Cas9 cell line engineering.

Interviews will be held in person in mid-late September and will include a 10minute presentation of a previous research project that the applicant has been part of.
