An opportunity has arisen for a research fellow specialized in quantitative data analysis to work with young advisors exploring barriers to mental health services. You will become part of an ESRC funded research team passionate to improve mental health care service provision for young people in UK. To realize this research aim you will be accessing secure health care and cohort data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) and the Longitudinal Study of Young People in England (NEXT STEPS) and apply innovative missing-not-at-random approaches to analyse the data. Upon completion of the quantitative analysis, you will be presenting the findings regarding characteristics and life-experiences of young people with emotional mental health problems not using formal mental health services at stakeholder conferences and meetings, and contribute to writing papers. In addition, you will be working together with YoungMind and ARC Wessex to disseminate the findings to the public, young people, parents, community organizations, policy makers, and mental health care providers.
This is an exciting opportunity for you to join the University of Southampton (UoS), a leading university for Health Sciences research, ranked in the top 3 UK universities in the overall quality of our research, with our research environment scoring top marks (REF 2021). This position will extend your experience in missing data analysis methods, mental health research, and allow you to collaborate with experts with lived experiences. The project is part of the vibrant and multidisciplinary portfolio of ARC Wessex, allowing you to network with local and national ARC colleagues, including medical statisticians. In addition, you will be able to attend local and national workshops, meetings, and conferences.
UoS offers some fantastic benefits including generous annual leave, company pension scheme, discounted private healthcare and dental, company sick pay, options for flexible working, excellent family leave arrangements, a wide variety of on and off-campus arts and culture facilities, subsidised health and fitness facilities. Some flexibility will be required from you as secure data analysis can only be done on a secure computer terminal at the UoS.
To be successful in this RF position you will have, or will be close to completing, a PhD with strong statistical component in a relevant discipline (e.g., statistics, epidemiology, social sciences). Essential attributes for the role are: being skilled in the use of R and/or STATA, experience in cleaning, formatting and analysing prospective cohort data, ability to write research presentations and papers. Additionally, knowledge and experience with missing data methodologies, especially missing-data-not-at-random approaches, ability to explain complex statistical methods and statistics to lay audience, and experience in the analysis of ALSPAC and/or NEXT STEPS and/or HES/primary care data is highly desirable. It is a requirement that the RF is accredited to work with secure data and therefore desirable that they have completed some form of \'safe researcher\' training, although this could be obtained upon appointment.
