Job description

The successful candidate will join a growing team in the Freeman Air and Space Institute (FASI), School of Security Studies, King\'s College London, during an exciting period in its development. The post holder will be responsible for conducting original research and analysis of current and emerging space security issues and working with the Co-Directors and other staff to support FASI\'s growing portfolio of activities, including space-related education.

Examples of relevant subject matter for the post include: space strategy; space power; space doctrine and operations; the future of space power; artificial intelligence and space operations; integrated deterrence and the space domain; and the public-private dimensions of space policy and security.

The post holder must hold, or be nearing completion of, a PhD on a topic ideally focused on space power and security. However, strong applications from candidates holding or nearing completion of PhDs on contemporary non-space topics within the broader field of strategic studies will also be considered.

The post holder will ideally have experience working on space issues in the policy-making world.

The selection process will include a criteria-based shortlisting process and panel-based interview. Interviews will be held the week after the closing date if possible.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 2 years.

This is a full-time post - 100% full-time equivalent.

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct and publish original research on contemporary/future space power, policy, strategy and security issues, as agreed with the Co-Directors of FASI.
  • Contribute to providing a range of opportunities for education in space power, including postgraduate research and executive education.
  • Contribute to the internal and external visibility of the Institute, including leading the organisation of certain events, managing social media, and appearing in the media as required.
  • Contribute to the management of research into space power and security, contributing directly to FASI research outputs, including working with Visiting Fellows as required.
  • Engage with a range of key stakeholders in the UK and abroad to maximise synergies within the study and analysis of space power.
  • Contribute to the knowledge transfer and capacity-building activities of FASI as directed by the Institute\'s leadership.
  • Support identifying and pursuing opportunities to secure external funding for FASI from a wide range of potential stakeholders.
  • Attend and, as appropriate, present research findings and papers at internal meetings and external professional events and conferences.
  • Work as a conscientious and committed team member to achieve the projects\' aims.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1. The successful candidate will hold or be nearing submission of a PhD in space power and security or a contemporary non-space topic within the broader field of strategic studies.

2. Knowledge of space power, strategy and security and associated relevant subject matters, which may include, but is not necessarily confined to: space strategy, doctrine and operations; the future of space power; artificial intelligence and space operations; deterrence and the space domain; ethics and space power; the public-private dimensions of space policy and procurement.

3. Excellent presentational skills.

4. Experience in producing research on space power and security or related contemporary non-space topics in the broader field of strategic studies.

5. Desire to promote the subject at all levels.

Desirable criteria

6. Experience working on issues with policymakers and other practitioners.

7. Experience designing education modules.

8. Evidence of the ability to manage administrative tasks and processes using standard Microsoft packages, including Excel.

9. Experience in implementing space power capacity building activity.

10. Experience in communications and media activity.

11. Experience in event management and facilitating skills.
