Job Description

(Grade 8; Fixed-Term 5 Years):

Facial prostheses are required when patients are treated for certain cancers, congenital deformities and trauma affecting for example the ears, nose, eyes, or skin or a combination of these. Current methods use silicones that are colour matched to the individual to create these prostheses. About the role:
The RA will test current and newly developed materials for facial prosthetics. They will work closely with other RAs and senior colleagues at the University of Manchester, Kings College London, University of Nottingham, and the University of Leeds. The successful candidate during this post will gain valuable experience working with clinicians in maxillofacial and oral surgery, scientists and engineers in additive manufacturing, reconstructive science, biomaterials, colour science, and imaging. The multidisciplinary nature of this project will allow the RA to gain broader knowledge, skills, and leadership training in different research areas, mentored by researchers at the forefront of their fields.

The successful candidate:
Candidates will hold, or be nearing completion, of a doctoral level degree (PhD) in either materials science, dental materials, bioengineering, biomechanical engineering, or reconstructive science disciplines and preferably have knowledge or expertise in polymer/medical/dental materials. The successful candidate should have laboratory experience of materials testing, preparation, and analysis.

Dr Winwood is the co-programme lead for the STP MSc Clinical Science (Reconstructive Science) programme at Manchester Metropolitan University in collaboration with Kings College London.
