Location: South Kensington campusAbout the role:Applications are encouraged for a Research Associate position to work on the project Safe, Sustainable and Swift Reconstruction of Ukraine (S3RU), funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).The project aims to recycle concrete demolition waste that has arisen from the war in Ukraine into new infrastructure materials and products. This concrete is expected to be 90% Portland cement concrete, with the remainder containing alkali-activated materials, and the existence of some asbestos contamination. The focus is on recycling the majority uncontaminated fraction of this material but with awareness and management of the other components. The research involves UK investigators from Imperial College London, University of Leeds, University of Sheffield, University of Oxford, as well as Ukrainian partners from the National University of Water and Environmental Engineering, Eco+Logic, Lviv Polytechnic National University, ReThink NGO and C2CA Technology B.V.What you would be doing:You will be responsible for quantifying the environmental and economic performance of the concrete waste recycling systems developed and deployed in the project. Environmental performance will be assessed by life cycle assessment, and economic performance by technoeconomic analysis. Data will be obtained from project partners and the literature.You will require regular contributions to research project tasks including positively interacting and communicating with internal and external partners, participating in project meetings, and travelling to those meetings where appropriate. You may also be required to develop research proposals, supervise Masters students, and demonstrate research excellence and leadership to more junior members of the Research Group. You will collaborate with researchers working in the project consortium in partner organisations. You will thus receive strong mentoring in a highly stimulating academic research environment, with access to internationally leading academics, industrial partners, research facilities, and networks.What we are looking for:
