Research Associate In Sensor Systems And Machine Learning For Delivering Next Generation Crops & Sustainable Food

Manchester, United Kingdom

Job Description

The University welcomes applications for applied electronics research engineers within the School of Engineering. The post has become available due to recent extension of the precision agriculture activities in the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering over three interrelated topic areas covering intelligent sensor systems research for delivering next generation crops and arable farming technologies. More than one appointment may be possible.

Working in partnership with industrial as well as academic researchers from other institutions and universities, you will become part of a multidisciplinary team notably in collaboration with plant scientist, materials engineers and business development researchers.

Applications are particularly welcomed from individuals who have interests in a longer-term academic career in intelligent sensor systems for precision agriculture and bio-electronics. Support will be provided to such applicants in their downstream application to Fellowship schemes or obtaining any further qualifications, such as chartered engineering status or a higher degree (if appropriate), as part of their pursuit of the research project goals.

The specific applied research areas to be addressed from the outset of the tenure encompass the sensor engineering associated with three principal areas: * Network sensor systems for in-field imaging and data processing of crop pathogen activity (disease vectors).

  • Active imaging sensors for manipulation and investigating plant photosynthesis and crop health.
  • High throughput real-time detection of crop phenotypes (features) above and below the soil or other growing media
It is not expected that you will have expertise in crop related topics, as you will be supported by colleagues with such competencies, however, previous interests in the area would be of value. As the research activity is highly applied, you will have the opportunity to contribute and be co-author on any intellectual property arising. In addition, it is anticipated the projects that are worked upon will be highly compatible with generating formal academic impact cases, alongside any publications arising, and you will be encouraged to assist and lead-on aspects of both. As the work in the group covers a breadth of precision agricultural activities in both developed and emerging economies it is anticipated that opportunities will arise throughout the research for travel and placements across the UK, Europe and further afield, notably Sub-Saharan Africa.

Alongside the specific research deliverables you will be encouraged to develop your own related research interests and possible broader pathways to delivering impact. In particular it is anticipated that any role you have in assisting in the formulation and design of any new related successful research proposals will be formally acknowledge, within the constraints of UKRI or other funding body\'s rules, through appropriate extension and broadening of the job role.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status. All appointments are made on merit.
