Applications are invited for a fixed-term Research Associate position, to start as soon as possible with a fixed end date of 23rd September 2024, to conduct world-class research under the supervision of Prof. Andrew Slark in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Sheffield.

We are looking for a talented scientist with a passion for polymer chemistry and motivated to make a difference by performing high quality science with potential industrial relevance.

The Research Associate will join the group of an EPSRC Manufacturing Fellow, proposing and performing their own research involving both organic polymer synthesis and physical polymer science. They will also provide leadership in the laboratory regarding safety standards and support/mentor other students.

The Research Associate will be responsible for:

  • Proposing and performing their own research involving both organic polymer synthesis and physical polymer science.
  • Providing leadership as a professional scientist, including supporting/mentoring other students.
  • Collaborating with other researchers within the Polymer Centre across the University.
The Research Associate will be investigating new functional polymers which target high performance and enable improved environmental outcomes. The activity fits with the Science Faculty\'s research priorities which include nanomaterials via sustainable polymer science.

You will need a PhD (or be close to completion) in chemistry, materials, or a relevant field (or equivalent experience) - overall with a high-level working knowledge of synthetic polymer chemistry and physical polymer science.

Experience in polymer synthesis (polyurethanes and polyesters and physical polymer science or polymer application is essential.

The successful applicant will be located at the University of Sheffield. They will have a strong publications list and be a highly motivated, independent research worker and a strong team player. Supervision of PhD and/or undergraduate students may be required and the ability to write high-quality first-draft scientific papers and give excellent oral presentations at international conferences is essential.
