An opportunity has arisen within the Alloy department for a Metal Buyer, reporting to the Alloy Plant Manager. The role carries full responsibility for the Exeter site, with strong support links to the Metal groups. This role is full time and operates on a day shift.
The role focuses on ensuring a continuous material supply while minimising inventory costs and fostering effective supplier relationships through evaluation, negotiation, and performance tracking.
Your main responsibilities will include:
Purchasing and scheduling the delivery of raw materials, working alongside production, planning and goods in departments.
Selection of high-quality suppliers based on the competitive advantage and within spec limitations.
Understand the approved suppliers and the marketplace.
Able to analyse and track the current and anticipated price levels of raw materials.
Negotiates prices, contracts, discounts and payment cycles with suppliers in support of Free Cash Flow Metrics.
Issue purchase orders, order acknowledgements to correct terms and reconciles open orders weekly.
Resolves supplier issues for materials, escalates in a timely manner when necessary and communicates the status to the Alloy Planning team.
Manage costs and identify opportunities to reduce costs related to raw materials.
Manage monthly scrap/dust sales.
Manage consigned inventory with suppliers on site and off site.
Review incoming raw material report on a weekly basis with scheduling for any delivery changes.
Inventory management; coordinate with operations to review aged materials on a monthly basis for disposition, root cause analysis, implement changes to mitigate aged material.
Manage shipping of excess inventory and revert outplant processes.
Build supplier relationships to streamline the escalation process for expedite.
Develop and maintain a database for customer stocking agreements.
Coordinate the ranking of suppliers on supplier scorecards- on time delivery and quality statistics.
Provide incoming material report to receiving.
Coordinate with Finance and Ops for pre-physical planning.
Run ad-hoc reports as necessary and summarise information to management.
Comply with purchasing processes and activities.
Ordering items/services not covered by agreements (blanket purchase orders, contract purchase orders) and not subject to leverage buy according to the appropriate best practices and procurement policies and procedures.
Implements contracts at local level and provides status reports to Corporate Procurement.
Expedites shortages or urgent requirements to support manufacturing location.
Conducts spend classifications and analysis.
Supporting internal material coverage linked to Long Term Agreements
Producing current elemental market studies.
Other raw material procurement activities.
Fulfil ASAT and other audit processes.
Essential
3-5 years of experience in Procurement, Finance, or Supply Chain roles
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Proficiency with Oracle systems
Proven negotiation skills and experience in supplier management
Ability to develop and implement strategic plans
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written, including face-to-face, email, and phone)
Proficient in Microsoft Office
Experience in purchasing, particularly with knowledge of metals
Strong team player with the ability to collaborate effectively
Ability to prioritise tasks in a fast-paced environment
Highly organised with exceptional attention to detail
Able to work efficiently under pressure and meet deadlines
Adaptable and flexible in response to changing work environments
Solid understanding of contractual and commercial principles
Desirable
Knowledge of alloy materials and their composition
Self-motivated with a proactive approach
Experience or knowledge in Supply Chain, Procurement, Metals, Chemistry, etc.
Quick to learn new processes and systems, including IT solutions and methodologies for Procurement activities
