WHAT TO EXPECT

This role is within the PD EO-10 Prototype Propulsion Build Team which is part of Powertrain build and test operations group. The team is responsible for the on-time delivery of prototype propulsion units, mainly Batteries, EDU\'s and Engines for JLR\'s engineering requirements. These units leave the build department to embark on a rigorous test programme, both in specialist off vehicle test facilities and within prototype vehicles.
The propulsion build team plays a critical role in ensuring those vital tests can take place, we hold the responsibility of ensuring that all the units are built on time, to the right level of quality, recording and resolving engineering concerns and issues on the unit and providing a robust sign off process. Within these activities there are a number of set processes that are adhered to, ensuring repeatability from programme to programme but maintaining the flexibility to work with individual programme requirements to get the best results for our internal customers and stakeholders.
The role of the Build Engineer is to enable continuous improvement of the prototype build process by providing technical and supervisory leadership to the team in order to meet engineering gateways, working with the engineering design teams to ensure the product is to the highest level of quality and ensuring that any issues are raised with the correct owners and resolved quickly to allow for smooth progress through the build phase.
This role is for a number of vacancies across the team with roles at both our Lyons Park facility as well as our Whitley Engineering centre with individual roles requiring emphasis of different skillsets to create an overall balance within the team of abilities, skills and experience.

Please note that double day shift working may be required as part of this role in accordance with business needs.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
  • Set daily work objectives for build team.
  • Management of time and issues throughout the day to ensure overall progress to plan is achieved.
  • To provide technical and supervisory leadership to the team in order to meet output targets. Including provision of Information, Instruction and Parts.
  • To lead resolution and implementation of solutions to resource, facility and quality issues, including planning.
  • Ensuring that all personnel maintain high levels of valid technical competency and have provision of personal development plan.
  • Maintain department records for audit purposes and to be the main point of contact for all relevant auditing process.
  • Ensure component build pedigree is adequately tracked via provision of a suitable build book.
  • Ensure availability of a suitable BoP and change management process, lead trials of the process via paper build and emphasis build to enable operations and ensure Safety and Quality measures are met.
  • Ensure availability of suitable tooling to enable operations to build to process and meet required process capability standards. Where possible, drive for a Make Like Production (MLP) solution.
  • Manage Prototype development for DV and vehicles via deviation matrix and instrumentation brochure - ensure timely delivery of Parts, Information and Instruction to enable build.
  • Work with engineering teams to develop state-of-the art build process, measurement techniques and validation methods to ensure a world class product.
  • Ensure build issues are raised, tracked and resolved via CCAR with suitable escalation to AIMS to enable support and knowledge transfer to manufacturing. Failure rate and scrap rate tracked to ensure stock control and cost management.
  • Manage build timing and ensure alignment to programme, supporting DV and Vehicle teams and aligning timing with Build Planning.
  • Ensure suitable provision of reporting for build to external stakeholders.
  • Mentoring and Training of those in Early Careers and Training as appropriate.
  • Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested from time to time.
  • Manage and organise resource to the relevant areas and up skilling of personal.

WHAT YOU\'LL NEED

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential:
  • Proven experience and understanding of facilities, processes, equipment and leading technologies.
  • Engineering knowledge of propulsion technologies
  • Clear and confident communicator both orally and in writing
  • Proactive attitude and willingness to learn new systems and processes.
  • Ability to accurately and concisely present complex technical ideas or project issues to a diverse audience
  • Understand safe systems of work.
  • Ability to challenge existing thinking in a positive way whilst building credibility and trust through experience and personal style.
  • Computer literate, including Microsoft Office and Excel competency to produce plans, reports, presentations, graphs, processes and SPL documents.
  • Ability to mentor and train others
  • A full UK Driving Licence with less than 6 penalty points, no disqualifications and 2 years accident-free record.
Desirable:
  • Technical expertise and experience of powertrain build processes.
  • Experience of fast-moving production/prototype environments
  • Experience writing and developing PFMEA.
  • Build planning experience.
  • Experience with IATF 16949 or ISO 9001 standards and requirements
