We are seeking to appoint a Programme Leader for the three BA Graphic Design & Illustration courses, who will provide dynamic leadership and lead the future development of the programme. The Programme Leader (PL) is the team leader of the course team, manages the effectiveness of the programme, its vision and external development in collaboration with the team and industry partners. In particular the PL will build on the high level of competitiveness and reputation of the programme nationally and internationally.
We are seeking an extremely motivated individual who is willing to develop the vision and profile of the Programme, as well as take on team leadership and day to day planning activities. The post holder will be a specialist in one or more of the following: graphic design, illustration, branding, advertising or the history, theory and context of the subjects - making a strong contribution to teaching and research in the School.
Main duties and responsibilities
The new Programme Leader will lead and implement the vision and overview of the BA (Hons) Graphic Design and Illustration (GDI) Programme including teaching, learning, assessment and overall quality of design teaching in the School at all levels of study; developing the schedules of study and projects across all levels of study working with other lecturers. They will ensure that the vision, curriculum and student experience for the BA (Hons) Graphic Design and Illustration is informed by current developments, the regulatory framework, research and contemporary international practice.
The postholder is expected to achieve high-quality student employment results after graduation, alongside successful employability experiences within the course, and to make contributions to BA (Hons) Graphic Design and/or Illustration teaching and research supervision as appropriate.
The Programme Leader will lead aspects of the writing and development of current and new programmes of study, including annual review, periodic review and enhancement and other developments across the School. They will be leading the development of live projects and work experience activities for students within BA (Hons) Graphic Design and Illustration, building opportunities for enhancing students\' employment prospects and entrepreneurial capabilities within the curriculum.
Part of the duties and responsibilities is to protect the quality and standards of the programme including leading on annual review and action planning and ensure that all necessary procedures are followed including that assessment and examination takes place within University regulations, ethical regulations and with regard to health and safety issues.
The Programme Leader will need to carry out the team leadership role including the organising and supervising of work of others on the team, team meetings and other associated activity in a collaborative and inclusive manner. They will carry out any necessary administration, including the maintaining of student records; working with the external examiner; preparing for Boards of Examination; Programme Committees, maintaining and update the Continuous Enhancement Planning (CEP), implementing the Herts Learning principles, health and safety aspects; timetabling and resource development; resource liaison with technical staff.
Skills and experience required
Essential experience and skills for this post include leadership of design groups, programmes and students in HE, relevant teaching experience in UK HE, with a focus on graphic design, illustration, advertising and/or branding. Moreover, the post requires experience in Academic Quality Assurance related to programme management (including annual monitoring reviews and understanding of programme quality metrics), a strong-track record of professional industry experience in either graphic design or illustration practice, and experience in curriculum design, developing new courses in graphic design and illustration, including validations and periodic reviews.
Qualifications required
The Programme Leader will hold a Master\'s degree in Graphic Design, Illustration or related subject, they will be required to be fellow of Advance HE (formerly the HEA) or in the process of obtaining one. A PhD in related subjects is desirable.
