Product Owner (contract)

London, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

We're seeking a Specialist Product Owner with deep expertise in Payment Service Providers (PSP) to lead the strategy, roadmap, and delivery of modern, secure, and customer-friendly payment capabilities. You'll work closely with stakeholders across engineering, finance, operations, and commercial to define how we accept, process, and optimise payments across online and physical channels.

This role will suit someone who combines strong domain knowledge with a strategic mindset, hands-on delivery skills, and a solid understanding of the UK payments regulatory landscape.

This is a three month rolling contract. You must be able to work onsite at the client office two days a week. The client office is located in Paddington, London.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Product Ownership & Strategy:

Define, evolve, and own the PSP product strategy and roadmap in alignment with business goals. Set clear product objectives that improve customer experience, reduce cost, and ensure operational resilience. Drive the selection and integration of acquiring banks, gateways, and alternative payment providers (e.g. PayPal, Apple Pay, Klarna, crypto). Understand and factor in payment regulations including PCI DSS, PSD2, SCA, Open Banking, and relevant UK-specific compliance requirements. Shape long-term architecture and platform thinking around tokenisation, orchestration, and payment routing.
Delivery & Execution:

Translate high-level goals into well-defined user stories and prioritised backlogs. Work closely with cross-functional teams to guide the design, build, and launch of payment-related features. Manage dependencies, risks, and delivery timelines while remaining responsive to change. Ensure all implementations are robust, secure, and scalable with strong monitoring and alerting in place.
Roadmap Planning & Performance Optimisation:

Maintain a living roadmap that reflects business priorities, technical capabilities, and external trends. Use data to evaluate PSP and transaction performance -- identifying areas for optimisation, A/B testing, or provider tuning. Forecast impacts of roadmap initiatives on key KPIs like authorisation rate, cost-per-transaction, and checkout conversion.
Stakeholder & Vendor Engagement:

Act as a central point of contact for payments across internal stakeholders (Engineering, Legal, Finance, Security, Customer Services) and external PSPs. Build consensus around roadmap priorities and communicate product direction and decisions clearly. Collaborate with external providers and internal procurement to negotiate contracts, SLAs, and technical support.

Experience & Skills Required

Strong experience as a Product Owner within payments, PSPs, or fintech, ideally within a retail or e-commerce setting. Deep understanding of payment systems, including acquiring, gateways, payment methods (card, bank, mobile, crypto), and settlement processes. Demonstrated ability to build and manage a strategic product roadmap aligned to business value. Clear understanding of UK regulatory requirements, including PCI DSS, SCA, PSD2, and Open Banking. Experience working with payment orchestration, tokenisation, fraud detection, and refunds/chargebacks. Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and vendor negotiation skills. Familiarity with agile delivery methodologies and tools like Jira, Confluence, Miro, etc. Data-driven approach with confidence using dashboards, metrics, and experimentation to drive product decisions.

Benefits

Play a pivotal role in transforming the payment experience at scale for a leading UK retailer. Influence how millions of customers interact with the brand across digital and in-store channels. Work with autonomy in a supportive, agile, delivery-focused environment. Collaborate with high-calibre engineers and commercial teams to deliver measurable impact.
