Here at Surface Transforms passion is at the heart of our brand. As a team we refuse to accept the impossible. We know that impossible only means that we haven't found the solution yet. Your role at Surface Transforms is yours to steer - toward opportunities and away from risks. You have the power to shape your role and we cannot wait to see where you take us and we'll take pride in supporting the future you chose to build at Surface Transforms.
We are looking for a Process Engineer to join our growing Process Engineering team. Our Process Engineer will provide support to the business in the design, launch & optimisation of new and existing core processes. As our Process Engineer - Heat Treatment & Metallurgy, you'll own and optimise thermal processes and material transformations that define the performance of our carbon-ceramic components. You'll be responsible for improving process stability, driving continuous improvement, and contributing to new product and process introductions. Your role will blend deep materials knowledge with hands-on process engineering to ensure repeatable, high-quality outcomes.
What you'll be doing as our Process Engineer:
Process Development & Ownership
Lead and improve heat treatment and high-temperature process operations (e.g. carbonisation, Chemical Vapour Infiltration, Melt Infiltration, Pyrolysis)
Develop and maintain robust process documentation (Process Flow, WI, PFMEA, Control Plans)
Investigate and resolve process issues using structured root cause analysis and corrective action tools
Ensure thermal processes meet design intent, mechanical property, and microstructure requirements
Materials & Metallurgy Focus
Collaborate with Design Engineering and Quality teams to understand material behaviour and optimise process parameters
Evaluate and interpret metallurgical data, phase transformations, and material microstructures
Conduct failure analysis on non-conforming parts and provide materials-based insights for resolution
Continuous Improvement
Identify and execute Lean improvements to reduce variation, increase yield, and reduce energy usage
Monitor and report key process metrics (e.g. cycle times, furnace profiles, defect rates)
Support implementation of new equipment and technologies to advance process capability
New Product & Process Introduction
Support design-for-manufacturing and process capability studies for new thermal processing steps
Qualify new materials, heat treatment methods, and suppliers
Assist in planning and execution of APQP, PPAP, and other launch-related activities
Compliance & Quality
Ensure processes comply with quality standards such as IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and customer-specific requirements
Prepare for and participate in audits and technical reviews
Promote and maintain a zero-defect mindset through robust process control
The Skills, Knowledge and Experience you will need as our Process Engineer:
Proven experience in working with and operating process equipment and heat treatment furnaces.
Understanding the significance of maintaining heat treatment equipment to ensure its safe and reliable operation.
Proficiency in performing detailed PM tasks and driving continuous improvement and re-engineering initiatives.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
Need to have:
Degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering (or equivalent)
3+ years' process engineering role
Knowledge of thermal processing techniques and their effect on material structure/properties
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills (e.g. DOE, 8D, 5 Whys)
Excellent documentation, planning, and communication skills
Nice to have:
Process Engineering experience in a heat treatment or high-temperature
Experience with carbon-ceramic, composite, or advanced ceramic materials
Familiarity with thermal processing equipment (e.g. vacuum furnaces, kilns, inert gas environments)
Six Sigma Green Belt or Lean manufacturing experience
Experience with materials testing (e.g. hardness, microscopy, XRD, thermal analysis)
You'll have these personal attributes:
Accountability
Continuous improvement
Communication
Collaboration
Independent thinking and working and problem solving skills
What we'll give you in return:
Attractive salary
25 Days Annual Leave + Bank holidays
Extra day Annual Leave for your birthday
Employee Assistance Programme
Death in service scheme
Salary:
