The AtkinsRealis Human Factors team has established presence across multiple UK locations including London, Bristol, Manchester and Derby. We are looking to expand and grow our Derby office to meet increasing client demand in the region. Our team offers exciting project work in several high hazard industries, including, but not limited to, Nuclear, Rail, Defence, and Infrastructure. As a Principal Consultant in the team, you will contribute directly to these projects, utilising an array of HF methodologies, as well as nurturing and developing existing relationships with both internal AtkinsRealis and external clients.

This role isn't just about project work though. You will be involved in the strategic growth and development of our Derby office and the wider team, including supporting the professional progression of junior colleagues. Your Purpose:



As a principal member of our growing team, you will have direct responsibility for developing and maintaining key client relationships with the major operators and engineering companies that are our core business, whilst also contributing to the strategy and direction of our dynamic team of dedicated Human Factors professionals, and support leadership of our technical capability.


Typical assignments will include leading client Human Factors and Ergonomics work packages, managing technical delivery to project programmes as well as leading and contributing to AtkinsRealis bids and initiatives. As a member of a client focused team, you will work on a wide variety of projects across a range of sectors of industry including Nuclear, and Energy Transition, Defence, and other Transportation and Infrastructure areas.

You'll want to make a positive contribution to the development plans of the Human Factors team. You'll use your entrepreneurial thinking and excellent communication skills to liaise with other groups and departments to provide integrated solutions to the client. You will also enjoy mentoring and developing junior staff, be reliable and consistent, and have an acceptance of responsibility for work carried out.


In addition to a willingness to travel to our client sites, you will be able to demonstrate the following:

Degree or experience in Human Factors or Applied Psychology or related field. Substantial experience of delivering HF work packages within high hazard industries such as Nuclear. Substantial experience in the use of Human Factors methods and techniques. Knowledge in the application of Human Factors standards and guidelines. Excellent report writing and presentation skills. Experience of managing and planning HF delivery to projects (HF Integration).

You may also be able to demonstrate the below desirable requirements:

Post graduate degree in Human Factors or Applied Psychology or related field. Experience of working within other 'Regulated' industries. Project interaction with Regulators. Knowledge of Human Factors Assessment techniques in relation to international standards and familiarity with latest UK regulatory developments relevant to major hazard industries. Application of HF Integration in the context of Safety Case development. Operator Safety Claims Requirements management. Quantitative Human Reliability Assessment. Training Needs Analysis. CAD / visualisation skills. Record for public speaking and publishing papers. Membership / Fellowship of a recognised professional society. Project Management and Business Development skills.
