The Opportunity

Our work couldn\'t be more important, and is of enormous significance to the security of our nation\'s democracy. It enables the UK Parliament to run smoothly, function efficiently and operate transparently, and when you join us in this vital role you\'ll have the opportunity to use all your tech skills as you lead the Network team within our Platforms Directorate. Leading day-to-day operational delivery including the design, implementation, maintenance and monitoring of network infrastructure, you\'ll have a strong customer service focus as you provide expert technical guidance on network infrastructure, methodologies and best practices.

You\'ll have a wide range of additional responsibilities, including:

  • collaborating with stakeholders to understand our business requirements
  • designing scalable and resilient network service solutions
  • evaluating emerging technologies and industry network infrastructure trends, assessing their potential benefits and making recommendations for adoption
  • developing and maintaining network infrastructure strategies, standards and guidelines to support our digital infrastructure
  • acting as a point of escalation for complex technical issues, and providing guidance, resolution and business continuity and disaster recovery planning to ensure minimal disruption to services
  • leading and mentoring a team of network engineers, promoting best practice, knowledge sharing and professional development
  • owning strong working relationships with our third party suppliers and providers
  • representing Digital Infrastructure at PDS forums and liaising with other teams and third parties
What You Need

An inspirational team leader with experience of building a high performing team, you\'ll set the technical direction, develop strategy and support roadmaps which aim to achieve continuous improvement of our networking services. With the ability to empower your colleagues to deliver and take ownership of their work, you\'ll also possess:
  • first-hand experience of working with third-party solutions or managed service providers to deliver sustainable cyber secure solutions
  • superb contract management skills and the ability to proactively manage resources
  • the ability to think creatively, ask the right questions and communicate your findings
  • the skills to lead investigations into problems and opportunities in existing processes, and create recommendations for improvements
  • the confidence to make appropriate decisions while considering the needs, priorities and constraints of the situation
  • strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to translate business requirements and stakeholder needs into practical solutions
  • hands-on operational experience in network engineering roles. This should include knowledge of:
  • local area network design and implementation including IP addressing schemas (IPv4 and IPv6), DHCP, VLANs and IP routing protocols
  • wide area network design and implementation including the use of MPLS, VPLS and VPNs
  • wireless networking design and implementation
  • application layer protocols including HTTP, SSL/ TLS, FTP, SMTP, DNS firewalls/ DMZs, web proxies, web application firewalls
  • network security solutions including network access control, 802.11x, secure web gateway, remote proxy and SIEM
  • familiarity with standards relevant to IT network security, such as ISO/ IEC 27033, and their future direction
  • use of network and platform performance monitoring, analysis and troubleshooting tools
  • the development of network architectures to support the use of public cloud services including usage of virtual private cloud connections, such as Express Route
  • experience of different technology delivery models including private, public and hybrid cloud environments
  • an understanding of server operating systems such as Windows Server and Linux and of desktop operating systems including Windows and MAC OS
  • the ability to pass security clearance, backed by the right to work in the UK
