As the first Principal Data Engineer at Sage Earth, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining core data infrastructure and architecture. You will collaborate closely with Developers, Climate Scientists, Engineering and Product Leadership to ensure that data is collected, processed and accessible for analytical purposes efficiently. Your role will be crucial in advocating for best practices, exploring new technologies and driving innovation through data engineering.
--- Tech Stack & Infrastructure ---
Our current tech stack includes Typescript, NodeJS, PostgreSQL and Kotlin. From an infrastructure perspective, we have built our solution using Terraform, AWS (Amazon Web Services) and Docker. A familiarity with the above will help but is not essential to the role.
The successful candidate will have:
Significant hands-on experience in data modelling, database concepts and SQL, aligning this to wider technical decisions to support delivering modern mid to large scale data platforms and data processing pipelines that are resilient, high-performant, and scalable.
Proven experience with data processing frameworks and tools
Built and deployed large scale data centric applications and data pipelines
Knowledge and comfort working with both relational and non-relational databases
Practical experience of knowledge of developing real-world solutions and platforms in a client focused, agile environment
Have a deep understanding of data architecture, schema design / modelling and warehousing concepts
Experience with cloud-based data platforms such as AWS or Azure
Knowledge and comfort working in a dynamic abstract environment with a certain degree of uncertainty, using evidence and applying judgement to balance pace and risk
Excellent mentoring skills with the ability to coach junior engineers as appropriate
Confidence to interact with a variety of projects with conflicting deadlines, pushing back on leadership when expectations are not achievable
Experience of a Cloud Data Warehouse is desirable for future but not essential
An advanced degree (Bachelor/Masters) in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field is preferred but not essential
Experience with sustainability software or related technology solutions useful but not essential.
Key Responsibilities Design, implement and maintain data processing pipelines to ingest, aggregate, clean and process large data volumes in a scalable way.
Ability to solve data-oriented problems at scale
Collaborate with highly skilled cross-functional team members to understand the data requirements and deliver both relevant and actionable insights
Utilise stakeholders in relevant fields to ensure data quality, integrity and security through implementation of appropriate data validation, storage, and access controls
Utilise monitoring and logging for troubleshooting data processing systems to maintain optimal performance, identifying improvement areas and sharing these appropriately
Document data processing procedures, architecture, and best practices for fostering knowledge sharing both internally and externally to the team
Stay ahead of the curve with the latest trends, tools, and technologies within data processing domains to drive both innovation and continuous improvement and deliver high quality results
Collaborate effectively with Engineers, Product Managers and Climate scientists to understand data needs, representing key data insights in a meaningful way and assisting in translating complex business requirements into scalable solutions
Analysis and implementation of data automation tasks.
Oversight and implementation of pragmatic data governance methodology.
Spot opportunities for improvement on data engineering and business intelligence best practices.
Share your knowledge across the business and advise senior leaders on data modelling and reporting best practice.
