ABOUT THE ROLE
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research fellow position in the area of Quantum Microwave Photonics with a focus on room-temperature microwave devices based on spin-triplet states.
Quantum and Molecular Photonics Research Group at Northumbria University is seeking to appoint a highly motivated researcher to design and develop optimised pump systems for room-temperature masers, characterise maser gain media, and incorporate them into the maser cavity for optimal maser action. The role will be a mix of simulations and experiments to develop optimised room-temperature maser devices based on organic and inorganic media.
The successful candidate will conduct research work to fulfil the development of a new class of room-temperature masers that has applications in deep space communication, quantum computers, medical imaging and potentially play a key role in improving sensors for security scanning. This position is funded by Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) project grant (EP/X016633/1).
The project is for a fixed term of 36 months.
You will be working with at Northumbria University and will be collaborating with groups in the UK, Italy and France. You will also work with our industrial partners, Element Six and Crytur. The position also offers significant opportunities for entrepreneurship.
ABOUT THE TEAM
The successful candidate will be based in the encompassing interdisciplinary research areas in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Quantum and Molecular Photonics, Optical Communications, Microsystems, Smart Materials, Microelectronics, Physics, Astrophysics, Mathematics and Statistics. The candidate will receive mentoring and will be supported to progress towards their independent academic or industrial careers.
ABOUT YOU
The ideal candidate will have a good theoretical and applied knowledge of optical physics, quantum photonics and microwave photonics. Experience in analytical modelling techniques, numerical simulations and optical experimentation is crucial for the delivery of the project. The candidate is expected to explore multidisciplinary work and collaborations with the project partners and the wider research community, internal and external to the University. A PhD in a relevant discipline is essential. In addition to the scientific work, the candidate is expected to contribute to disseminating the project outcomes.
