Postdoctoral Research Associate

Job Purpose

You will make a leading contribution to the project Optical Forces and Torques in Structured Light Fields working with Prof. Stephen Barnett. The successful candidate will contribute to the composition of research publications and presentations and will assist with managing the project.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. To carry out a programme of research under the supervision and in collaboration with (named PI and others).

2. Contribute to the development of mathematical models of structured light beams and their interaction with matter.

3. Document research output including maintaining records and data bases as appropriate and contribute to the drafting of reports, papers and research presentations.

4. To attend and participate in appropriate research seminars/conferences within the subject area.

5. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in group meetings and discussions as well as meetings with collaborators and presentations at conferences.

6. Contribute to the supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

7. Assist with simple administrative tasks and so contribute to the smooth running of the Quantum Theory Group.

8. Contribute, as appropriate, to outreach and recruitment activities.
9. Carry out modest teaching activities (e.g. demonstrating) and the associated admin. as agreed with .the PI and the Head of School.

10. To carry out administrative tasks associated with both research and teaching as assigned to you by the Head of School and/or Research Group Leader.

11. To undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as required by the Head of School and/or Research Group Leader.

12. Contribute to the enhancement of the University\'s international profile in line with the University\'s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Qualifications

Essential:

A1 An awarded PhD in the relevant specialism or equivalent

Knowledge

Essential:

C1 Knowledge of current research within the field of quantum optics and/or related areas.

C2 Ability to work with a variety of mathematical tools used in quantum theory using both analytical and numerical techniques.

Skills

Essential:

C3 Familiarity with techniques commonly used in quantum theory and, especially, in quantum optics and electromagnetic theory.
C4 Communication and presentation skills, both oral and written.

C5 Interpersonal skills.

C6 Time/project management skills as appropriate.

C7 Self-motivation and ability to work as part of a team.
C8 Ability to work in collaboration with colleagues, including collaborating experimental teams.

C9 Ability to assist in the running of the research project and the group.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Record of relevant research experience.

E2 Familiarity with quantum theory, electromagnetic theory and optics.

E3 Experience of scientific writing.

E4 Experience of publishing and presenting research results in international journals and at conferences.

E5 A degree of independence as evidenced by instances in which you have influenced the direction of a research project.

Desirable:

F1 Experience in the mathematical modelling of materials and molecules.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, \xc2\xa339,347 - \xc2\xa344,263 per annum.

This post is full time, and has funding for up to 2 years
