Looking for a new and exciting challenge? Then think about working in NHS Forth Valley in the heart of Scotland.

NHS Forth Valley: Where exceptional Psychiatrists can flourish and really feel at home

In NHS Forth Valley we know the radical and transformational difference Psychiatrists make to the lives of their patients. This is why we have developed, and will always strive to maintain a system that allows them to do this work. In NHS Forth Valley we passionately believe in joined-up, holistic care across the whole patient journey. We have resisted the fragmentation of our services. Our world class trauma psychotherapy service informs everything we do, allowing our Psychiatrists to deliver genuine, trauma informed care. We have a dynamic Psychiatry workforce and due to the relatively small size and adaptability of our health board our Psychiatrists are able to become effective leaders that can drive through positive changes. In recent years our Consultants have led in reconfiguring our service to provide consistent, tiered, evidenced based treatments for those who experience emotional dysregulation and personality disorder.

We are in an exciting place with regards to Psychiatry in Forth Valley. Our goal is to be able to evidence we have the best mental health services in Scotland. We have recruited extensively in recent years and now have a dynamic team to help us achieve this goal. We are in a position to be able to focus on developing high quality services going forward. Our inpatient General Adult Psychiatry wards were awarded accreditation status from the Royal College of Psychiatrists in December 2022 for providing high quality care (ours are 2 of only 4 wards in Scotland to currently hold this status). Our goal is that all of our services will achieve similar recognition for providing excellent care over the next 5 years. The post holder would be a key part of this.

We would be delighted to support the post holder to work towards qualifying as a trained Consultant via the CESR route. Sessional time would be allocated for this. We have a track record of supporting our substantive Speciality Doctors through this process, and we are setting up a CESR fellowship programme. Local senior Psychiatrists are being trained as CESR evaluators.

In addition to this we are established as a leading centre for training and developing Psychiatrists. Our local teaching and training programmes have been nationally recognised and we are keen to expand them further. We are home to the Scottish Centre for Clinical Simulation and Human Factors, one of the most advanced training facilities of its kind, where medical staff are able to hone their skills using computerised mannequins. Through this centre we have developed the award winning PSYCHSIM programme. This trains our staff in managing emergency situations that arise on Psychiatry wards.

Many of our existing Consultant Psychiatrists have a national profile in Medical Education and so new members of our team would have immediate links to regional and national teaching opportunities.

We are also able to offer innovative and bespoke job roles for candidates interested in combining sessions of General Adult Psychiatry with sessions in other specialities, including Rehabilitation and Substance Use Psychiatry. In particular, we are keen to explore developing roles across both substance use and general adult settings, to support our existing programme of joint working and improved interface in these areas.

We will work with the successful candidate(s) to develop a suitable job plan.

You can look forward to a warm welcome and strong support from colleagues. Our hospital is situated in the heart of Scotland, nestled against the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, and close to vibrant towns that are richly endowed with excellent cultural and sporting facilities, offering good transport links to Edinburgh and Glasgow.
