Are you a people-focused leader with a passion for managing complex field surveys?
We're looking for a proactive and resilient
Field Operations Project Manager
to join our
Land, Soil, and Coast
team.
Reporting to the Head of Group, you'll play a vital role in delivering large-scale, multi-organisation projects focused on monitoring the condition and changes in land and freshwater ecosystems. You'll lead the coordination of field operations and manage a widely distributed team of up to 40 Field Surveyors, ensuring the successful collection of critical data and samples across Wales and beyond.
Current projects include long-term monitoring programmes such as
ERAMMP
and
Countryside Survey
, both of which assess environmental change to support government policy development.
In this role, you'll collaborate with sub-contractors, liaise with key stakeholders, and work alongside scientific and operational teams to ensure field surveys are well-planned, safely delivered, and meet high-quality standards. Acting as the linchpin of our field survey operations, you'll drive clear communication and seamless coordination across diverse teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Plan, develop, and coordinate field survey activities, including recruitment and training of seasonal staff, scheduling, task dependencies, procurement, and project execution.
Line manage remote field survey teams, supporting day-to-day operations, wellbeing, health and safety, expenses, and coordination with payroll and contract agencies.
Oversee the implementation and maintenance of project health and safety procedures, including training and documentation.
Manage communication strategies across multiple audiences--surveyors, internal teams, stakeholders, and subcontractors--using a range of media and formats.
Support project finance by developing and monitoring budgets, managing resources, and analysing financial data.
Ensure quality assurance and control of field data, and help improve integration with remotely sensed data methods.
Track progress and provide regular updates and reports on fieldwork activities.
Identify, assess, and manage project risks and issues, implementing mitigation strategies and escalating when necessary.
This is a dynamic, fast-paced role ideal for someone who thrives under pressure and enjoys solving complex challenges with a practical, hands-on approach. Strong communication and relationship-building skills are essential, as you'll be working closely with stakeholders to deliver impactful results.
As these national surveys follow an annual cycle, you'll take the lead on seasonal recruitment to ensure a skilled, well-prepared team is in place each year. If you're looking for a varied and meaningful role where your problem-solving and leadership skills can shine, this could be the perfect opportunity.
What We're Looking For:
A degree (ideally in Science, Ecology, or Business) or equivalent relevant experience.
Proven experience managing field survey operations and remote teams, ensuring delivery of high-quality, quality-assured data.
A calm, adaptable approach, with the resilience to manage changing priorities and find practical solutions in real-time.
Demonstrated line management experience, including performance and wellbeing support, and recruiting seasonal staff.
Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
Strong time management skills, able to work independently and meet deadlines.
Collaborative mindset and willingness to learn and share with others.
Good working knowledge of field-based health and safety practices, including lone working.
Willingness to travel, with occasional overnight stays.
