Job Description


We are seeking to recruit a PP Operations Manager at our Carrington Site.
Carrington Site is located approximately 10 miles from the City of Manchester, England, and covers an area of 300 acres.
The site began operations in 1949, and today produces polypropylene resins used for a wide variety of products. Our polypropylene plant produces resins for use in carpet fibers, ropes and textiles, molded products such as food containers, crates, chairs, car components and film for many packaging applications.

Basic Function

The purpose of the job is to manage operation of the Polypropylene and Movements Areas, including steam boilers, cooling towers and laboratories so that forecasted production quantity and quality is achieved; in accordance with company policy and relevant legislation. This is a top tier COMAH site and this role will be key to ensuring excellence in all aspects of HSE performance and to ensure products are tested in line with established quality procedures.

The role has 11 direct reports and is in charge of the operations teams, day and shift, and the laboratory.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Establish and manage an operational culture in which employee health, safety, environmental stewardship and operational excellence are the top priorities
  • Implement appropriate work permit controls, including the safe handover of equipment to/from operations to maintenance and other groups.
  • Be responsible for effective production performance in relation to (not exhaustively):
  • plant HSE performance
  • production according to plan
  • manage target rates
  • plant reliability (in conjunction with maintenance manager)
  • quality including product complaints investigation
  • variable costs/yields
  • plant operational fixed costs
  • laboratory testing
  • Accountable for management, training, appraisal and development of production/ laboratory staff and active promotion of flexibility and overall performance
  • Introduce new products in co-ordination with laboratory/product supervisor, site process engineer, R&D and asset manager.
  • Investigate all customer complaints relating to operational activities at the site and completion of necessary corrective actions.
  • Be the business operational interface for optimisation of the product slate, product transitions and production / materials planning.
  • Make proposals for plant changes and minor capital projects in line with site and corporate strategy, budget capability and business plans.
  • Monitor and look for ways to continuously improve plant performance, identify savings and synergy projects in order to achieve Operational Excellence.
  • Participate in relevant knowledge exchange communities; internally known as TKM (Technology Knowledge Management)
  • Act as Site Main Controller including on-call rota responsibilities.
  • Provision of out of hours support to the Operations Team when required to ensure optimum safety and performance is maintained by this 24/7 operation.
  • Participate as a member of the Carrington Management Team in translating the site\'s business plan and strategy into local actions
  • Recruit, develop and support Operational apprentices by working in close partnership with training provider(s) and peers.
Person Specification

Education:
Degree level qualification in a relevant field eg. Chemical Engineering

Work Experience:

In excess of 10 years\' experience within the chemical industry or other suitable environment
Proven managerial experience for at least five years; ideally within a unionised environment
Practical experience and understanding of statutory regulations pertaining to Health, Safety and the Environment.

Languages:

Must be fluent in both written and verbal English.
