Job Description

St Catherine's is a small 10 bedded care home based in Lanark.



This position is for a Night Care Assistant with an SVQ2 / SVQ3 preferred but not essential. Candidates must be willing to complete their SVQ within 12 to 18 months of starting employment with St Catherine's.

Hours - 2 nights 19.50 hours per week

PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION The Night Care Assistant provides waking night assistance for the residents of the Care Home, including the performance of domestic duties which can be undertaken at night. To provide a high standard of person-centred care to the residents of the care home at night in accordance with their assessed needs, ensuring that a safe, effective and efficient care service is provided, which enhances the life of each individual. To work effectively as part of the team, creating a warm, comfortable, friendly, homelike environment, and in accordance with the safeguarding policy and the philosophy of the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Care, Support and Wellbeing 1. To help and assist residents with all aspects of personal care requested throughout the night shift such as showering and bathing, dressing and grooming, dental hygiene, toileting and continence care, as they get ready for bed, or upon waking in the morning, as drawn up in their care plan. 2. To supervise and monitor all residents at agreed regular intervals at night, attending to individual needs with particular awareness of the personal safety of each one. 3. To be alert to the changes in a resident's physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing and to assist the resident as appropriate. Record and report these observations on the digital care software and to senior staff. 4. To encourage and support the optimum level of independence while maintaining residents' privacy, dignity and self-esteem. 5. To treat each resident as an individual, respecting their faith, ethnicity and background, and facilitating opportunities for choice. 6. To assist each resident to maximise their potential while understanding the importance of the changing needs of a person's physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual abilities as they age. 7. To become familiar with and adhere to the planned care, support, rehabilitation or respite programme for each resident. 2 8. To assist residents who need help during meal times (be aware of swallowing difficulties, dietary requirements etc). Assist with preparing and serving of food and drinks as requested / required. Wash up as requested / required. 9. To assist, engage and involve residents with their activities, interests and hobbies (if awake at night). 10. To escort residents traveling e.g. on emergency hospital visits, appointments, etc. 11. To assist sensitively to the delivery of end of life care. To ensure full privacy and dignity is maintained for the dying and the bereaved, in line with the Home's policies and procedures. Health and Safety 1. To ensure a safe, stable, secure and homely environment that promotes sleep is provided for all and to report anything to the contrary to Senior Management or to maintenance personnel. 2. To ensure that all fire prevention policies and procedures and security management of the home is strictly adhered to and any concerns are immediately reported. 3. To ensure the compliance of a high level of infection prevention and control is maintained throughout the home. 4. To ensure all risk assessments are adhered to and actioned as necessary, in line with policies and procedures. 5. To respond quickly, calmly and effectively to emergencies, following policies and procedures accurately. 6. To ensure a high level of competency and diligence with the safe administration of medication to residents in accordance with the Medication Policy and procedures. 7. To assist residents with physical movements in accordance with manual handling procedures as required. 8. As appropriate, to assist residents with their support equipment such as wheelchairs, aids, zimmer frames, spectacles or adaptations etc, and ensure that they are kept clean and in working condition. 9. To ensure all equipment used is in a safe working condition and report any faults immediately. Administration and Communication 1. To ensure you have signed on and clearly read and understand the handover notes at the beginning of each shift and are clear in relation to your responsibilities for the home and the changing needs of each resident. 2. To use and update the Person Centred Software (PCS) effectively for the management of resident's care plans; recording of activities; and medication management, in accordance with the Home's policies and procedures. 3. To ensure that all relevant policies, procedures and current legislation are understood and adhered to. 4. To practice maximum integrity in all dealings with residents' personal and financial affairs, and avoid abuse of the privileged relationship that exists with residents. 5. To record and maintain all digital and written records as required, reporting any concerns to seniors in accordance with Care Home procedures. 6. To answer the door and the telephone appropriately, responding accordingly and to pass on messages promptly. 7. To ensure you work within the requirements of the Data Protection Act in all matters. Teamwork and Training 1. To participate fully in handovers to staff at the beginning and end of each shift, aided by the digital care software. 2. To work as a team member and to support and assist fellow colleagues, including giving guidance and support to new staff during their induction, leading by example. 3. To report all observations and concerns on the PCS digital care software, and contact the on-call colleague for advice on any serious issues that may arise, in accordance with the On-Call procedures. 4. To participate in staff training and development programmes and attend any mandatory training programmes as required (including safeguarding; manual handling; fire and smoke safety; and COSHH awareness) ensuring safe work practices are employed. 5. To be supported and enabled in skill development and personal development through regular supervision, training and annual appraisal in line with the Care Home's policies and procedures. 6. To attend and participate in regular staff meetings for reviews and updates. The Environment 1. To undertake light housekeeping duties (e.g. laundry, cleaning, catering, room management etc.) as required. 2. To ensure care for residents clothing is kept to quality standards - clean, laundered. 3. To ensure all areas of the home are kept secure and tidy. Personal conduct 1. To ensure personal compliance with the Care Home's policies and procedures and all statutory regulations required in registered care homes at all times. 2. To practice under the regulations of the Care Quality Commission / Care Inspectorate and any other regulatory bodies. 3. To manage professional boundaries when carrying out all duties. 4. To comply with the agreed conditions of employment; desired standards of behaviour, uniform, general appearance, personal hygiene, hours of duty, duty rotas, time keeping etc. 5. To respect and comply with the requirements for confidentiality and Data Protection in all matters relating to the residents, staff and business of the Care Home and the Charity. To ensure that all information of confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties. 6. To offer a flexible approach the role of Night Care Assistant taking into account the changing needs of residents, the service, and ongoing changes in regulatory requirements. 7. Due to the unpredictable and varied nature of life in a care home, all staff are expected to work in a flexible way when tasks not specifically in their job description have to be undertaken. 4 Additional Information 1. COVID-19 considerations: Appropriate PPE worn by all staff and care home protocols in place. 2. The post holder must at all times carry out their responsibilities with due regard to the Charity's Equal Opportunities Statement. 3. Work in line with the Charity's Safeguarding People from Abuse Policy and Whistle Blowing Policy to ensure that people are kept safe at all times. 4. The post holder must carry out their responsibilities with due regard to the non-smoking environment of the Charity. 5. The post holder must accept responsibility for ensuring that the policies and procedures relating to Health and Safety in the workplace are adhered to at all times. 6. The post holder must respect the confidentiality of data stored electronically and by other means in line with the General Data Protection Regulation of 2018. 7. Ensure risk assessments are actioned as necessary, in line with policies and procedures. 8. To undertake any other duties required by the Registered Care Manager, which are commensurate with the general level of this post. St Catherine's has adopted the principles of the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) Code of Practice for Social Service Workers and Employers which requires the post holder to live out the Code in every aspect of their work, and for their actions to demonstrate a commitment to the Code.

Qualifications (Care Home in Scotland) ? Required to be registered with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) as Practitioners in a Care Home Service for Adults. Cost of Registration is met by the Employee. ? To register with the SSSC you must satisfy the criteria for registration. This includes holding, or agreeing to work towards, the appropriate qualifications for the post applied for. ? Those who do not hold appropriate qualifications for the post would be expected to achieve this qualification within 18 months of start date. SAAS funding or Apprenticeship funding may be available.
