Job Description

The National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) seeks a postdoctoral fellow to be based in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading. We need a motivated scientist interested in working on Earth System Data Assimilation, and evaluation of the Coupled Energy, Water and Carbon cycles, using remotely sensed data and model reanalyses. The post is funded via the NCEO Long term strategic and International science programmes.

You will join with experienced modelling, satellite remote sensing and data assimilation teams at Reading University and you also collaborate with key scientists from other institutes in the National Centre for Earth Observation, the European Space agency, the UK Met Office, and the ECMWF who are at the forefront of this challenging area of climate science. A strong technical capability in large scale geospatial data analysis will be required.

This is a full-time, fixed term post of up to 24 months. NCEO receives long-term national capability funding from NERC. It may be possible to extend the post subject to the availability of funding, and alignment to NCEO\'s future strategic scientific requirements. The postholder will be appointed either at Grade 6 or Grade 7, depending on their relevant skills and experience.

You will have:

  • A PhD in the physical sciences, maths or computing (or soon to be awarded)
  • Experience of numerical geospatial modelling or data analysis
  • A strong motivation for research and good verbal and written communication skills
