About the vacancy:
This is an opportunity to carry out research that is part of an exciting European Innovation Council-funded project that brings together Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) technology and hydroponics. It will develop next-generation hydroponic production systems with near future applications in agriculture and the urban environment. The project is led by KU Leuven in Belgium and has partners in Southampton, Madrid, Paris and Vienna. The research at UWE will focus on developing hydroponic systems to interface with MFCs in order to optimise C, N and P recovery from a variety of wastes.
About you:
You will be expected to conduct research activities to meet the objectives of the UWE work package and overall project milestones. You will be carrying out research in a greenhouse/laboratory environment to optimise light and nutrient regimes for hydroponics driven by MFCs. The use of analytical chemistry to monitor flows and the use of primary nutrients, together with growing plants hydroponically will be central to your work. An important part of your role will be to contribute to the development of biofilms for MFCs and the development of algorithms for control systems. You will also be contributing to technology transfer and citizen engagement activities. You will be publishing research outputs and travelling to meetings with project partners. Your values will align to those of UWE and the project which include inclusivity, sustainability and the circular economy.
