Kore is a small, well established, local company, designing and building vacuum-physics based instrumentation, primarily based on bespoke mass spectrometers. Our customers are mostly involved in research, both in Europe and elsewhere in the world.
We work at the cutting edge of analytical chemistry, facilitating ground- breaking research in atmospheric chemistry, medical breath analysis, manufacturing quality control, materials science and high energy physics. Our projects have included counting single atoms, creating chemical images of sample surfaces, helping analyse the solar wind, and looking for cancer markers in human breath.
We need a mechanical engineer to discuss and implement the ideas of physicists, internal or external, in the general field of vacuum based instrumentation and in particular, time-of-flight mass spectrometry.
We mostly work with vacuum compatible materials, primarily stainless steel, high performance aluminium alloys, bronze, or a few select polymers, with no, or dry, lubricant. Typical requirements are high precision, high stability, sample manipulators, perfectly aligned, cylindrical, ion-optical components with voltage stand-offs up to 25kV, welded ultra-high-vacuum chambers with many flanges at a multitude of angles, and sample heating/cooling from several hundred degrees down to liquid nitrogen temperatures. In addition, new projects involve discussion of specifications vs cost/ time-scale and a rapid outline design to lend weight to the proposal.
The applicant should have a good first degree in mechanical engineering or a general engineering course with an emphasis on mechanical design, or alternatively have proven experience in this field. They should be able to work with the existing 2D CAD system in the first instance, but with 3D rendering to check for clashes between assemblies competing for solid angle around a sample normal. We design many custom systems, so we need someone able to work from general physical principles and knowledge gleaned from the literature, internet, or otherwise to tackle problems in new areas.
Previous experience with design inside ultra-high-vacuum systems, or high voltage ion-optics would be an advantage, but the techniques can be learned.
