The RNLI is looking for a full-time Mechanic Coxswain to join our lifeboat crew in Eastbourne, to work as the lead mechanic and deputy coxswain for the station.

The Lifeboat Station at Eastbourne supports the RNLI by saving lives at sea, providing support to the community and working with our colleagues in other emergency services and community organisations.

Your Role

As a Mechanic Coxswain at Eastbourne lifeboat station, you\xe2\x80\x99ll work alongside a Coxswain Mechanic and Lifeboat Operations Manager to ensure the crew, station, and its Tamar class lifeboat (ALB) and D Class Lifeboat (ILB) are always ready and maintained to provide an effective lifesaving service. The focus of your role will be to:
  • Ensure planned and reactive maintenance is completed and recorded appropriately.
  • Uphold RNLI policies and procedures; operating within international, national and local maritime standards.
  • Act as an ambassador for Safety, Health and Environment policies and procedures within your area.
  • Maintain your competency and meet the RNLI\xe2\x80\x99s fitness and medical standards for the all-weather lifeboat mechanic role
  • Work with the Lifeboat Operations Manager and Coxswain Mechanic to mentor, coach and motivate station volunteers; to ensure their operational readiness and welfare and maintain a safe and inclusive environment.
  • Provide input into the Community Lifesaving Plan, to help ensure an effective lifesaving service; liaising with RNLI volunteers and the wider community to achieve this.
About You

You\xe2\x80\x99ll be someone who understands that this is more than a job and is able to commit to the demands of the role; available to keep the lifesaving service operational, passionate about lifesaving, happy being based and working in a coastal community and maintaining our high standards.

To be considered as the Mechanic Coxswain you will need, or have the ability to attain, the following:
  • Experience of maintaining and operating high speed marine diesel engines and their ancillary systems.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and operational leadership skills.
  • A Marine/Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship, or equivalent, to NVQ Level 3
  • Maritime experience with knowledge of SAR operations, the ability to command a team and safely operate/handle vessels up to 20 metres in length and/or RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Power) qualification or equivalent (Commercially endorsed).
If you are an experienced and qualified Mechanic looking for an exciting and rewarding challenge, or are someone with the experience of handling boats in a variety of conditions who can develop their mechanical skills, we will support you to learn in this role so long as you meet the minimum requirements.
