Wakefield Council are looking to recruit some hardworking individuals who are looking to start a career in leisure. This unqualified lifeguard role is open to all providing you can meet the following criteria.

Requirements for qualification

  • Work a 22.25 hour contract which includes earlies, lates and weekends at one of our centres.
  • You must be able to jump/dive into deep water, swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds, swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water, tread water for 30 seconds, surface dive to the floor of the pool and climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where the pool design permits.
This assessment will take place on the day of the interview prior to the NPLQ course. * Attend all days of the NPLQ course taking place between October 30th until November 5th.
  • You must be 18+ years of age when taking the final NPLQ assessment.
Becoming a lifeguard is an excellent career choice at whatever stage of life and a great place to start if you are looking for a career in leisure. Many of our lifeguards go onto continue their careers by becoming, Fitness Consultants, Swimming Teachers, or Assistant Managers. The life skills learnt can be widely used and transferred to other jobs as you will hold a level 3 first aid qualification. Should you be successful in your application to this role, you will be provided with training and support to help you achieve National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) and become a fully qualified Lifeguard. Lifeguards learn first aid and lifesaving skills during their training and play an essential role in ensuring that the public is safe around water. The role of a lifeguard is varied, maintaining safety in and around the pool, educating swimmers about water safety, giving first aid, and conducting rescues in emergencies. Lifeguards working in pools with dry side facilities may also have responsibility for tasks within those areas such as setting up equipment or helping out on reception.
