Job Description

We're looking for a Legal Counsel to join our Legal team here at The Telegraph to support in a fast paced and exciting environment. You'll support across a broad range of commercial contracts as well as providing administrative and project management support on a number of key commercial projects.

This role will suit a newly qualified lawyer with solid commercial law experience and ideally expertise within the media industry, but we are also open to applications from a contract manager with significant project management experience who would be comfortable handling some commercial agreements.

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain commercial and media law experience in a high profile business and provide support on some exciting projects in 2025. You will report into one of the Senior Legal Counsels. We operate on a flexible working basis and you would be required to be working in the office in London, Victoria 3 days a week.



Responsibilities:



Commercial Contracts:

The commercial contracts that you will work on will relate to the commercial operations of the Telegraph and the distribution of content on multimedia channels (both traditional print and website), as well as mobile platforms and social media channels. This will include (but not be limited to) SaaS agreements, technology agreements, performer/contributor contracts, syndication agreements, consultancy agreements, brand licensing, non-disclosure agreements, events and exhibition agreements.

You will be expected to (i) draft contracts using existing templates (ii) identify issues and risks in contracts (iii) discuss and negotiate details in contracts with external companies and (iv) work with the business to make sure the contracts have the necessary protections.

Carry out general administrative duties alongside the Trainee Solicitor, including helping to keep the team worklist up to date, get agreements signed and filed, support the General Counsel with specific project based administrative tasks and work with key stakeholders across the business on certain projects.

Advertising:

Support the Compliance Officer in their advice and counsel to the business on advertising matters including advising on the ASA/CAP Code.

Data Privacy and AI:

Be keen and willing to upskill on data privacy and AI terms utilising the expertise of the Data Privacy Team and Group Legal Team with a view to negotiating data protection addendums and AI addendums over time.

Legal Research:

Carry out legal research to a high standard where applicable.

Intellectual Property and Domains:

Help manage the IP and domain portfolio alongside other members of the team.

Work with External Counsel:

Supervise professional staff and outside counsel as necessary.



Requirements:



Commercial contract review experience: A law degree or other legal training and practical experience working on commercial contracts (either qualified experience in a law firm/in-house or experience working in a tech/media business as a contract manager). Legal knowledge and drafting: Experience drafting, with an emphasis on plain English drafting, and negotiation skills. Additional legal knowledge: Knowledge of intellectual property, technology, privacy and consumer protection laws is preferred. Organisation, administration and project management: Excellent organisation skills and an ability to manage projects with multiple stakeholders. A willingness to take on and own certain administrative functions. Process improvement: You are happy to share knowledge on how to improve contracting processes to maximise efficiency. Team player and communication: Excellent interpersonal skills, good team player, and an ability to communicate clearly and effectively with internal clients and external parties. Work at pace: Ability to manage a high volume of transactions, work to tight deadlines at times and work independently.
