Lecturer/senior Lecturer (architecture Praxxis Atelier)

Manchester, United Kingdom

Job Description

The Manchester School of Architecture is ranked 5th in the QS world university rankings and enjoys the unique context of being a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester. It is one of the largest Schools of Architecture in the country with over 1200 students (typically representing some 85 countries) and over 150 staff from diverse backgrounds and is proud to retain both its quality and sense of community despite its size.

The School is characterised by excellence, ambition, boldness, inquisitiveness, innovation, and social justice and responsibility. These facets generate a unique blend and balance between research led teaching, impressive and relevant research outputs (84% of research activity is world leading or internationally excellent), and extensive professional industry links, all of which encourage our students to cultivate their own unique approach to architecture and their careers thereafter. Imagination, we take it seriously!

PRAXXIS is a female led vertical teaching atelier in the BA3 Architecture, M.Arch years 1&2 and the Masters in Landscape Architecture here at the MSA. We explore and ask questions as to what feminist architecture might be now and in the future. By using the lens of intersectional feminism, we explore inequalities and inequities in society and what that may mean for the built and digital environments. We work to two core principals the personal and the political the often-heard feminist slogan, suggesting a connection between an individual experience and the wider social or political structures. We see our studio as both a safe and brave space for the projects to emerge. A space to talk. A space to share. A space for the voices of others. A space to engage with others. A space to mentor. A space to be feminist. A space to tell stories. A space to question. A space to discuss what is not discussed.

Alongside your teaching in the PRAXXIS Atelier you be required to teach design studio in the BA Architecture programme for one day per week. The PRAXXIS role will include teaching both studio and developing some vertical theory seminars and the remainder of the time will be allocated to academic administration relating to your teaching roles and to Research Knowledge Exchange / Education opportunities if appropriate.

The successful candidate will:

  • hold a postgraduate qualification in Architecture and a PhD in a related subject/agenda to complement the atelier
  • be able to lead on feminist and inclusive design approaches
  • have a breadth of teaching experience across multiple year groups and will be required to run a PRAXXIS year cohort
  • have delivered pedagogic innovation
  • be capable of working with the atelier leader and the studio teaching team to develop further vertical teaching and vertical cross disciplinary theory seminars
We particularly welcome candidates with feminist approaches and specialist knowledge in relation to one or more of the following:
  • climate change and sustainability
  • inclusive and socially driven design research methodologies
  • decolonising of the curriculum
  • development in the global south and global east
To apply, please submit your CV and Covering Letter via our application portal. Within your covering letter, please state if you are looking to apply for the Lecturer or Senior Lecturer position. Informal discussions can be held with PRAXXIS Atelier Leader and Department Education Lead Helen Iball .
