Full Time Fixed Term -until 31.08.2025
Closing Date: Monday 04 September 2023

The Department of Social Statistics and Demography (SSD) invites applications for a fixed-term Lectureship post to further strengthen our international reputation in teaching in research methods as applied to the social sciences. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research methods expertise can complement and further develop our current research areas in demography, global health, official statistics, statistical modelling and survey methodology, but candidates with research interests with substantive applications in other areas of social science, including economics, politics, criminology and sociology will also be considered, and are encouraged to apply.

SSD is currently home to several major ESRC and H2020 grants, and members of SSD direct two ESRC Centres the Centre for Population Change \xe2\x80\x93 Connecting Generations and the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods. Other key research institutes to which our staff contribute include the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI) and the Centre for Global Health and Policy.

The role

We are seeking to recruit a candidate with expertise in research methods. Whilst the substantive area of their expertise could match one of the research groups in the department, this does not necessarily need to be the case as long as your substantive research area fits somewhere within the School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences. You will contribute to the educational activities of SSD through delivering innovative, research-led instruction, designing, and marking assignments/examination papers, and through supporting an engaged learning community. You will contribute to the design and delivery of our research methods teaching across the school and contribute to our Continuing Professional Development programme of teaching.

You will also carry out administrative duties within the Department and the wider Faculty of Social Sciences. You will be expected to engage in research, including the publication of research results in peer-reviewed international journals, and demonstrate leadership in seeking research funding. A track record in leadership in seeking funding would be an advantage and is particularly important for appointments to L5. The post-holder should be able to demonstrate a strong research portfolio and will also be expected to contribute to research income generation and enterprise activities.

The post is available on either a part-time or full-time basis, but the minimum is 0.8 fte. The post is fixed term for two years.

About you

You will have a PhD (or be nearing completion in case of L4) either in qualitative or mixed research methods, or in a social science discipline where you have demonstrated expertise in qualitative or mixed research methods.

You should already have (for L5) or are beginning to have (for L4) a national and international reputation, publish in internationally leading academic journals, and possess the ability to plan, manage, organise and assess your own teaching contributions. Some experience with quantitative methods would also be helpful. You must be able to satisfy all of the essential criteria detailed in the job description.

What we can offer you

The salary can be offered at \xc2\xa338,205 - \xc2\xa339,745 (Level 4) or \xc2\xa340,931 - \xc2\xa346,047 (Level 5), depending on experience and qualifications, pro rata if applicable.

As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect, and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work.

There is a generous holiday allowance as well as additional university closure days and excellent family leave arrangements (including paternity, maternity, adoption and parental leave). We are committed to supporting our staff and students and open to a flexible working approach.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Amos Channon, Director of Programmes in the Department of Social Statistics and Demography, by email: .

Interviews will be held in September.
