Ranked 31st in the world (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023), the School of English at the University of Leeds operates at the leading edge of literary studies and creative practice. Located within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures, the School counts many world-class writers and dramatists among its staff and former students, including the Poet Laureate Simon Armitage, the crime writer Peter Robinson, and two Nobel Laureates: Wole Soyinka and Ngugi wa Thiong\xe2\x80\x99o. With a view to enhancing the relationship between the areas of Theatre and Creative Writing, the School of English is looking to appoint an outstanding teacher and practitioner with expertise in writing for performance and theatre-making.
As a lecturer, you will contribute to, consolidate and extend the School\xe2\x80\x99s existing strengths in teaching, research, creative practice and collaborative activities within the areas of Theatre Studies and Creative Writing. You will have completed a PhD in a relevant discipline, or will have equivalent professional experience. You will also have experience of teaching at undergraduate, and preferably also postgraduate, university levels. You will have produced high-quality research publications and/or creative outputs. Expertise in teaching the writing of plays, scripts and other forms of performance, and a knowledge of international approaches and contexts will be particularly welcome. An understanding of decolonial perspectives and experience of teaching world literatures is highly desirable. Part-time and flexible working arrangements will be considered.
You will design and deliver lectures and seminars on existing core modules, such as ENGL1195 Reading Theatre, Performing Text (Level 1) and ENGL2075 Developing Creative Writing (Level 2). You will have opportunities to devise and teach specialist modules relating to your areas of research expertise. You will also supervise undergraduate final-year projects. You will be expected to teach and supervise Masters\xe2\x80\x99 students, and to supervise PhD students. You will work collaboratively with colleagues in other Schools within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures. You will also take an active role in the life of the School, and in interdisciplinary collaborative research groups, such as the Centre for Practice Research in the Arts (CePRA) and the Leeds University Centre for African Studies (LUCAS).
