Your new role

Hitachi Rail are offering an exciting opportunity to join its growing UK Services business by joining the Etches Park team in Derby. The fleet consists of 33 five car class 810 Bi mode trains that will revolutionise rail in Derby.

Responsible for leading the investigation of maintenance, reliability and safety related vehicle defects. Development of subsequent engineering solutions to ensure contractual reliability targets are achieved and maintenance practices implemented / improved. Also responsible for those activities relating to design modifications and subsequent applications for customer / regulatory approval for changes. This role will also involve regular travel to Melton Mowbray and Newton Aycliffe.

Main Responsibilities

  • Being the point of contact for any key reliability or product safety issues, ensuring suitable escalation and reporting both internally and to our customers.
  • Lead a team of engineers from a technical perspective, reviewing and approving their output and ensuring a high standard of work.
  • Deputise for Engineering Manager during holidays / periods of absence.
  • Ensure safety and reliability issues are understood and containment/corrective actions are identified and in place
  • Attend meetings with customer and other stakeholders as required
  • Support East Midlands Railway train delivery, testing and commissioning teams.
  • Leading the development of the engineering function that will be required during the testing phase to include modification and engineering change. Ensure all engineering work is recorded into the Maintenance Management System.
  • Responsible for providing engineering support at Etches Park or any other testing location as required.
  • Leading the deployment of the initial and ongoing depot engineering processes and procedures relating to engineering change. Incorporate best practice and lessons learnt from the established fleets at other Hitachi TMCs.
  • Leading the continued development of the SAP maintenance management system (MMS). Ensure all engineering and modification requirements are captured and delivered.
  • Support the development of the core team - act as an engineering representative and mentor to the depot maintenance teams on a shift bases.
  • Support the material management team with setting up of the material stores both at Etches Park and at out based locations as required during testing and commissioning. Ensure all material usage is controlled and recorded in the Maintenance Management System.
  • Responsible for designing solutions and gaining customer / regulatory approval for changes in train design.
  • Lead the development of documented engineering procedures, practices and policies.
  • Lead the co-ordination of continuous improvement programmes to ensure contractual requirements are achieved and exceeded.
  • Lead the optimisation of the Company\'s maintenance regime and assisting in the development of best European / World Class maintenance practice in support of current and future contracts.
  • To liaise with Procurement / Maintenance Team members during the assessment and approval of new material suppliers to ensure that Maintenance, H & S and environmental needs are adequately identified / addressed.
  • Work closely with the Reliability Analyst and Reliability Technicians to identify the root cause of defects within the shortest possible timescale.
  • To confirm that traction and rolling stock assets comply with operational specifications by the use of engineering processes and techniques
  • Modify or manufacture traction and rolling stock components by material or processes
  • Modify or manufacture traction and rolling stock hardware and software components
  • Materials - Interrogate the SAP system to determine if spares are available to complete works orders ensuring the correct procedures are followed to ensure that material used is recorded to works orders and material returned to the stores are labelled correctly
  • Production of Depot Safety Case reports / documentation in liaison with Engineering Manager, Duty Fleet Managers and QHSE Manager.
  • Liaison with Hitachi and external personnel as required to complete the duties of the post.
  • Must be prepared to travel and overnight away from base location for short periods of time to support East Midlands Railway when required.
  • Any other ad hoc duties as required.
About you

Essential

Licences / Competences
  • The ability to successfully gain Network Rail Sentinel PTS
  • Manual Handling, COSHH
  • Experience of delivering engineering support
  • Outstanding Safety Awareness
  • Highly experienced in undertaking engineering change
  • Competent with stores, spare parts logistics and material management
  • Experience of undertaken reliability improvements plans and modifications without impacting on the maintenance plan or availability.
Qualifications
  • HND or equivalent qualified engineer or equivalent proven railway experience
  • Previous experience in product improvement and reliability engineering on UK rolling stock
  • Membership of a recognised accredited engineering body (desirable)

Desirable

Licences / Competences
  • Intermediate > Advanced IT skills - typically Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook
  • Reading electrical, pneumatic, mechanical schematics and drawings reading
  • Powered plant and tools - bogie drop, cranes, air systems / 110v tools.
  • Depot Protection
  • Working at Height, COSHH, Manual handling, AC/DC Depot isolation
  • Experience of working at stabling out stations or main line station technical support.
  • Rolling stock experience preferably gain from a previous modern rolling stock fleet introduction.
  • Robust knowledge and experience of railway engineering standards and regulations
  • Extensive experience of modern maintenance management systems (MMS) and associated reliability and available trend analysis.
