The role

The Lead Process Safety Engineer is a pivotal role, responsible for developing and supporting process safety systems in the Wessex Water Group/YTL Group of companies in the UK.

Reporting to the Head of Water Recycling Avonmouth and working with managers, health and safety professionals and external parties, you will provide support to ensure effective process safety, systems and compliance are in place.

As the technical expert, you will be relied upon to author and own the DSEAR related process safety procedures, standards and safety rules, and provide a national, best practice perspective from your wider professional work in process safety engineering.

Alongside this you will provide expert advice on hazard identification (HAZID), hazard operability (HAZOP), layers of protection analysis (LOPA) and safety integrity level (SIL), while also promoting safe working practices and challenging unsafe behaviours as you come across them.

You will complete site incident investigation, root cause analysis and reporting. You will also recommend remedial actions and facilitate training workshops where necessary, including supporting and developing course content.

Additionally, you will undertake regular audits and inspections while reviewing/challenging work in progress, as well as ensuring existing inspection reports, DSEAR assessments, asset standards and safe operating procedures are reviewed and regularly updated.

What do I need?

To be of sufficient seniority for this role you will either be an established figure in the process safety field (Fellowship or CEng) with national credibility and extensive experience (five to 10 years) of biogas or similar process plants, or a developing Engineer close to achieving the same.

Having a technical expert on process safety engineering is paramount in this position and so is communication. This role will see you frequently interact with a wealth of stakeholders, varying in seniority throughout the business, so you will need to be an engaging communicator, who is able to articulate views on preferred courses of actions.

As a minimum you would have the following:

  • a degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
  • at least five to ten years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in a Process Safety Engineer role in a high hazard industry, with bio-gas experience (or equivalent)
  • a Chartered Engineer and member of IChemE or IMechE (or able to achieve this in one to two years with minor additional competencies)
  • a successful track record in institutional technical activity, standards committees or national or governmental bodies, drafting consulting on and publishing standards
  • knowledge and understanding of environmental regulations and best practice procedures
  • knowledge of DSEAR, process safety, HAZOP and HAZID, health and safety and environmental regulations and best practice procedures
  • working knowledge of water supply, wastewater treatment and recycling operational assets (or equivalent always-on 24 hour process operation).
