Job Description


A Lead Immunology Scientist is required for a growing scientific business in the UK who are hiring for their Immunology team. The company collaborates with industry leading scientific companies and academia to develop new medicines and enhance the innovation / growth of the UK drug discovery industry. The role is based close to Manchester and will need to be on site as much as possible due to management of a small team and the collaboration requirements.

The role of Lead Immunology Scientist would suit a highly motivated self-starter who is passionate about better translation of preclinical cell culture models to the clinic, to improve patient outcomes. Working in an interdisciplinary team, the successful candidate will apply their expertise in immunology and associated methods to deliver impactful results, characterising the immune response in complex cell systems and prosecute cellular target engagement and target validation studies.

The candidate will provide scientific and project leadership in this discipline to deliver collaborative projects and build new capabilities via innovation and integration of the latest technologies. The successful individual will have disease area expertise in in-vitro immunology and will use this experience with support from other areas of the business in developing the assay platform e.g. application of high-resolution imaging and transcriptomic analysis. The Lead Immunology Scientist will also be responsible for driving innovation in immunology assays, ensuring the company is aware of new developments in the field. In addition, the individual will work with other groups within the company such as Translational Imaging and Biomarkers to co-ordinate activities in immunology and engage with the external community to bring on new projects.

The required skillset for the Lead Immunology Scientist is:

  • The successful candidates will possess a PhD in immunology or cell biology, with substantial relevant postdoctoral experience in immunology.
  • Extensive experience in culture of mammalian cells including significant background of working with primary cells isolated from human blood, including the isolation of cell types from whole blood and the analysis of phenotypic responses.
  • Experience of working in drug discovery, ideally in an industry setting
  • Proven expertise and good publication record in immunobiology and development of in vitro cell assays to characterise immune function.
  • Experience in flow cytometry, microscopy techniques and molecular analysis would be an advantage.
  • Proven track record of leading and delivering projects in a collaborative environment with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Broad knowledge of innovative technologies being applied to advance translational science.
  • Experience of working in or with SMEs and a good understanding of commercialisation of science would be an advantage.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both experts and non-experts in the field.
  • Highly effective strategic communication and research collaboration skills, working closely with a wide range of colleagues in range of academic and commercial organisations.
