As our International Affairs Lead, you will be the council's lead expert on international relations, leading a small internal team covering global diplomacy, twinning, international funding bids, partnerships and more. You will work to deliver our Global City strategy and lead future updates of the strategy. For up to two days per week you will also lead on international work for Core Cities UK, a group of the 12 largest UK cities outside London.
Located within Bristol's award-winning City Office, you will work closely with that team to help join-up international work with local and regional partners and our collective priorities.
This is a busy senior role, and to be successful you will need previous experience in international affairs, a well-honed political radar and the ability to self-start. You will need to take a high level of accountability for both originating and delivering the team's work programme. You will be able and confident to form and maintain international relationships and build the city's profile overseas. This work will include securing opportunities for funding, policy exchange and collaboration for cities, networks of cities and institutions around the world.
The role suits a confident networker who has stand-out interpersonal skills, as the role involves engaging with people at all levels - from grassroots local organisations through to direct relationships with UK government, global city governments and institutions. This can include sensitive matters, diplomatic issues and other high-profile topics.
The role is based in Bristol and there is an expectation that you will be working in person from our offices at least two days per week, with flexible and hybrid working options available. It will involve occasional national and international travel, and it is desirable (but not essential) for you to speak one or more languages other than English.
