We are seeking a detail-oriented Instrument Coordinator and Sterilisation Technician to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all sterilisation processes are conducted efficiently and in compliance with health and safety regulations. This role requires a strong understanding of sterilisation techniques and the ability to operate various technical equipment. The Sterilisation Technician will play a crucial role in maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and safety within our facility.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintains a clean and orderly central processing area (e.g., shelves, counters, equipment)
Ensures clean and dirty workspaces are clearly identified and separated
Knowledgeable of and maintains strict compliance to sterilisation policies and procedures
Reprocesses each item according to industry standards and manufacturer's instructions for use, including but not limited to decontamination, cleaning, disinfection, and sterilisation
Ensures only items designated by manufacturer and approved for re-sterilisation and multiple patient use are processed
Inspects instruments under magnification for damage and defects; lubricates items (as required)
Ensures all equipment and instrumentation is in good working condition prior to reprocessing
Sorts and arranges items into proper trays as defined by facility
Wraps trays and individual items according to manufacturer's instructions for use
Properly mixes cleaning solutions per manufacturer's instructions for use
Accurately labels each item per facility policy
Correctly operates sterilisers, ultrasonic washer, and other processing equipment per established
protocols, operational instructions and facility policies and procedures
Performs and documents required biological/chemical monitoring tests on all sterilisers according to manufacturer's instructions and established policy/procedure
Understands the appropriate response required for a failed Air Removal Test, Sterilisation cycle and/or Biological, or Chemical indicator
Ensures contaminated instruments are transported to decontamination room in closed containers marked as biohazardous
Maintains inventory levels and accurate records
Checks for outdated items and package integrity of wrapped sterilised items; replaces items as necessary
Places items in correct location
Maintains adequate inventory of all supplies for the sterile processing area
Maintains/updates the instrument tray inventory list
Accurately documents count of instruments loaned/returned to outside sources
Move and handle trays and items of various weights and sizes
Maintain accurate records and keep documentation up to date
Dispose of contaminated waste in accordance with hospital policy
Regularly check that our instruments are in good working order and all faults are reported and take action to rectify problems and escalating issues where necessary
Coordinates and communicates with nurses, materials and/or relevant persons in loaning, borrowing, lending and returning instruments and equipment when needed
Coordinates with theatre team in a timely manner to ensure the adequacy of instrumentation for the surgical cases
To work as an active member of the theatre team and maintain good working relationships.
Attends required education/training
Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned
