Job Description


A 8PA post is currently available on Opal Ward. The post-holder will provide clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary team on the ward along with the ward manager and modern matron and will assume consultant psychiatrist responsibility for patients admitted to the ward.

Main duties of the job

Opal ward is also a 20 bed rehabilitation ward, offering general adult rehabilitation to those with complex and treatment resistant severe mental illness, and has 10 male and 10 female beds. Patients are admitted from the two Buckinghamshire acute wards, namely Sapphire and Ruby. The majority of patients are detained and require complex discharge care packages.

All inpatient wards are currently AIMS accredited. There is Place of Safety attached to the ward.

Job description
Job responsibilities * The consultant will be expected to provide consultant input to all inpatients under their care and provide clinical leadership to the MDT and work actively with the ward manager and modern matron to deliver this.

  • The consultant will provide direct clinical supervision and line management to the trainees and any senior trainee. This will include 1 hour per week clinical supervision for trainees in conjunction with other consultants.
  • The consultant will be expected to provide direct clinical care and to supervise the clinical care of all inpatients as appropriate and ensure medical involvement in the CPA process for all inpatients. This will include MHA work, reports and assessments as appropriate and include RC responsibility for all detained patients
  • Providing timely written correspondence to relevant professionals documenting assessments, ongoing management, progress, and eventual discharge using Trust IT and clinical records system training will be provided where needed
  • Work collaboratively with other agencies. In particular liaison with staff from other teams to manage smooth and timely transfer into and out of the unit. The teams most commonly involved with this will be the CRHT, Adult Mental Health Teams, Day Hospitals, Early Intervention, Opal Ward Rehabilitation Unit and Ashurst Ward Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit.
  • Active commitment to delivering the Trusts clinical governance agenda.
  • Contribution to developing and delivering improved clinical services as outlined in the National Service Framework for Mental Health.
  • The consultant will be expected to contribute to the collection of data as required by the Trust and other relevant agencies. This includes the timely recording of clinical activity data, and participation in clinical audit with appropriate administrative support.
  • The consultant will be expected to attend most regular directorate managerial meeting as necessary, particularly Consultants Meeting and Directorate/Managerial liaison meeting.
  • The consultant will be expected to participate in and attend the local training programme for junior doctors.
  • The consultant would be expected to participate in both a CPD peer group and a clinical supervision group with fellow consultants.
  • Consultant would be expected to maintain their own programme of training and CPD accreditation with the support of their Associate Medical Director/Clinical Director.
  • Leave cover: The inpatient consultants on Ruby, Sapphire and Opal ward cross-cover for each other for annual leave, study leave and brief periods of sickness absence in addition there is a day time cover rota. The consultants take part the Buckinghamshire Adults of Working Age out-of-hours rota. This is a 1 in 16 rota, with 3%, band A There is a core trainee on shift out of hours. The trainees also cover Southern Health, learning disability trust, out of hours on a rolling rota but receive direct supervision from Southern Health Consultants on call.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrist\'s Guidelines)
  • Approved clinician Status and section 12( MHA) Approval are essential. Candidates who are in the process of getting AC approval will be considered
  • Eligibility for Section 12 (Mental Health Act)
Desirable
  • Higher degree or equivalent in relevant field of medical, psychological or other studies
Training
Essential
  • Higher specialist training in psychiatry in approved training post for a minimum of three years, equivalent training in another country, or previous consultant experience relevant to this post
  • oCCT in Psychiatry OR Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in psychiatry OR within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview
Desirable
  • Rehabilitation endorsement from Royal College
Clinical Experience
Essential
  • Experience of the full range of clinical responsibilities expected of a consultant in this specialty
  • Experience of close collaborative work with social care and other agencies
  • Ability to undertake full range of consultant responsibilities
