Overview

Element Materials Technologies is looking to recruit a Materials Engineer or Scientist with an interest in metallic materials and fracture mechanics. You may be a recent graduate or have a few years of experience after graduating.

This role requires the successful candidate to be responsible for managing multiple metallic and non-metallic materials testing projects within the Hydrogen Testing area of the business, on behalf of numerous clients. Projects will involve research of how metallic and non-metallic materials respond when exposed to Hydrogen gas, measured by characterisation of materials before and after exposure and during exposure.

This is a very hands-on role which involves laboratory testing of both large components and small coupon type samples, contact with customers and other laboratories within Element as well as managing of projects including writing of technical reports.

Responsibilities

  • Planning of materials testing
  • Carrying out exposure tests in high temperature, high pressure Hydrogen environments
  • Materials characterisation testing
  • Fracture mechanics testing (Bolted Compact Tension, Slow Strain Rate testing, Dynamic Fracture Toughness)
  • Managing a small set of customers and their testing requirements
  • Design and writing of internal test procedures
  • Using industry standards and current public domain research to generate test plans
  • Performing of high temperature and high-pressure tests
  • Gathering, recording and analysing of test data
  • Preparing technical reports
  • Presentation of data and ideas internally with Element and to customers when required.
Skills / Qualifications

Essential:
  • Relevant degree in Engineering/ Materials/ Chemistry
  • Good understanding of metallic materials, in particular failure modes of metals, processing methods and coatings
  • A strong interest in performing of non-standard tests including validation of new equipment and techniques, in addition to carrying out testing to well established routine procedures
  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety including ability to follow risk assessments and COSHH assessments
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Ability to communicate with colleagues at all levels within the business
  • Willingness to pass on knowledge including training of other team members when required
  • Can compile and analyse testing data from the tests performed and form firm conclusions about material changes
  • Good understanding of testing concepts
  • Possess computer skills (Word, Excel etc.)
  • Ability and willingness to stand on feet for long periods of time and carry out physical tasks, including lifting
  • Developed problem solving skills
  • Good observational skills, attention to detail and ability to work accurately and precisely
Desirable:
  • \xe2\x80\xa2 Experience of working with flammable gases.
  • Knowledge of the Hydrogen Industry, associated hazards and working practices.
  • Experience of carrying out failure analysis of metals
  • Experience of working in a commercial metals/materials laboratory.
  • Hands-on experience of mechanical testing of metals (tensile, fatigue, fracture mechanics, creep testing).
  • Knowledge/ experience of working with non-metallic materials \xe2\x80\x93 elastomers/ thermoplastics/ thermosets/composites/ adhesives.
  • Experience of working to standards (ISO, ASTM etc.)
  • Experience of operating laboratory instruments (GC, GPC, DSC, DMA etc)
  • A working understanding of Kaizen/ 5s principles
