A rare opportunity has arisen to work in the Registry team in Highways.
Are you interested in local historic mapping; land boundaries and ownership; using your legal and technical skills to solve highway disputes; supporting enforcement and the legal professions? If so, then we have the perfect role for you in our Highways Registry Team.
The Highway Registry Officer is a very specialist role that requires a high level of accuracy with a flair for problem solving and unravelling the mysteries of highway land changes over hundreds of years.

The Registry team is a small team which holds many of the Highways department\'s records, including the street archives passed down by previous authorities.
In addition to maintaining the highway records, the team carries out a broad range of duties which include: providing information & advice on highway boundaries & status to a wide range of internal & external customers; assisting the conveyancing industry through the provision of searches & highways reports; actioning licence applications for pavement cafes, disabled ramps & boundary markers; investigating ransom strips & ancient highway claims; and supporting highway enforcement colleagues.
The Registry team routinely deals with teams from across the Council, in addition to councillors & MPs, the legal profession, the police, the utility & telecommunications industry, local businesses and the general public.
Working under the direction of the Senior Registry Officer, the Registry Officer will assist in carrying out all of the above functions. Prior experience of working in a registry role is not essential, as extensive on the job training will be provided. However, the successful applicant should have an orderly approach to their work and an eye for detail & accuracy, an interest in record keeping & historic records, a good standard of education, and a willingness to learn.
The team currently operates a hybrid working model which involves a combination of working from home and from the office, although the emphasis may be on office working during the first year in post. The team is currently based at Flint Street, Fartown, Huddersfield although this is presently under review.
